BAA 1, Devonshire Cougars 0

when he scored the winning goal of this Shield final at National Stadium yesterday with just 10 minutes remaining.

The clincher came after left-back Steven Gair found Clevie Crichlow with a throw down the left flank and the skipper quickly sent a cross into the middle to Pacheco who wasted little time in hammering it past Leon Place in the Cougars goal.

It was a crucial blow to Cougars who were in full flow during the second half but just were unable to finish off some good approach work.

The victory saw BAA become the first team to repeat as champions -- after beating Prospect a year ago -- and it also saw them become the first Second Division team to defeat Cougars this season.

A disappointed Brian Anderson, coach of Cougars, summed up things this way: "The better team on the day won. You simply have got to put away your chances and we didn't. If we had done so earlier it would have changed the game around.

"We went on to dominate the second half after doing well in the first, but all of that doesn't count if you cannot find the goal.'' Frustration set in for Cougars early when, direct from the kick-off, striker Dapo Frederick fired at goalkeeper Phillip Bolton from close range when he should have scored.

And that proved to be the trend of things for Cougars throughout with Frederick and the bulk of Cougars' attack guilty of poor shooting.

Pacheco was similarly a culprit up front for BAA as he too squandered two chances, but for the remainder of the first half Cougars were in charge.

"The first half, we relied more on defending because they (Cougars) beat us 5-1 last week and we expected their confidence to be really high,'' said BAA coach Johnny Adams. "We knew they would control most of the early play even though we missed a few chances.'' It was from the kick-off that BAA signalled that they meant business in the second half when Pacheco was foiled by Place with the 'keeper advancing and diving to block the forward's shot from close range. But BAA did little afterwards as Cougars fought back to take the initiative.

However, for the longest while, Cougars were baffled by poor shooting with Frederick, Dwayne Bean, Wali Salaam and Steve Coddington among those firing shots either wide or over the goal.

Cougars seemed surely to be rewarded for methodically throwing their opponents out of gear, but their finishing remained shaky and the BAA defence was let off the hook.

It was when Cougars appeared to be in control that BAA, during one of their few isolated attacks, countered down the left flank and saw Pacheco stun Cougars with his fine effort.

"In the second half we pushed forward a little bit more. But even though Cougars controlled a good part of the half we still knew that our chance would come. It takes only one goal and we got it, '' said coach Adams.

"It was a good finish to what has been a great season for us. Our goal was promotion, and we did that two weeks ago. Now this is what we regard as being icing on the cake.''
