Belboda fires Colts into final
(Colts won 4-3 on penalties) Shannon Burgess went from hero to villain and back to hero again as Devonshire Colts secured their place in the Dudley Eve final after a penalty shootout against PHC last night.
The Bermudian international captain hit a cracker from inside the centre circle to open the scoring, then played a back pass too short from which PHC, without suspended Stephen Astwood, equalised and finally notched one of his side's spot-kicks to set up a date with North Village.
Jermaine Belboda hit the decider to give Colts a 4-3 win on penalties after the scores had been locked at 1-1 after 90 minutes.
The match, at Devonshire Rec., was played in a swirling wind and the elements favoured Colts in the first-half.
Neither side managed a shot on goal in the first eight minutes, but Burgess changed all that with a strike that if you're a Colts fan you'll say he meant and if you're for PHC you'll say was bad goalkeeping.
Picking the ball up inside his own half, he advanced over the half-way line and seeing the 'keeper off his line struck the ball from fully 45 yards out.
PHC 'keeper Jay Lee Smith must have been surprised by the shot and also caught out by the wind as the ball fell in under the crossbar and through his hands.
Referee Richard Knight had to be replaced at the break by Anthony Mouchette as his recently broken ankle began to cause him pain.
McLee Smith equalised when he chased down Burgess's back-pass to Smith and although his namesake made contact with his boot, the ball struck the PHC player and was diverted into the net.
So like three of the four other ties before it this one went down to penalties.
PHC's Dano Outerbridge and Colts' Burgess netted, but then Chris Furbert hit a post and Smith saved Aljame Zuill's kick.
McLee Smith scored, as did his Colts' counterpart Damon Ming but then Stanton Lewis and Vic Ball missed leaving the scores level.
Ottis Steede scored for PHC, and Quincy Aberdeen did likewise.
But then Ibou Barry stepped up for Zebras and sent his kick inches wide of the post leaving it to Belboda to decide the outcome of the match.
The ball went to the left of Kevin Bean and he embarked on a lap of honour closely pursued by ecstatic team-mates.
