Berkeley sink Saltus in five-goal thriller
to win the High School Over-15 Knockout Cup by 3-2.
Despite the problems of the National Stadium not being available, and the failure of match official Stuart Crockwell to show up, the senior teams of Saltus and Berkeley put on an excellent cup final display at BAA Field.
The level of performance was even more remarkable given the dreadful condition of the field. Nevertheless, the game was played in excellent spirit and both teams were a credit to their schools.
Berkeley were on the board after only two minutes, when an unmarked Chris Moulder rose high to score from a left side corner. Tyrell Burgess put his team 2-0 up soon after with a header of his own, Burgess showing quick reflexes in heading the ball home after it had taken a deflection off a team-mate.
The Berkeley forwards continued to put pressure on the Saltus defence and were rewarded in the 25th minute with another goal, this time from Sean Brangman.
But Saltus refused to die and created chances of their own in the first half, Henry Talbot unlucky not to pull a goal back for Saltus near the break, as he was left to but watch his fierce shot from the left scrape the far post.

They finally did get on the scoreboard 10 minutes into the second half through Chanjiv Simons, who managed to outpace the Berkeley defence and score past the advancing goalkeeper.
The goal seemed to wake up the Berkeley side, with Ryan Nesbitt producing a great effort from the edge of the penalty area, but Saltus goalkeeper Sean Dunkley pushed the ball around the post.
Rotimi Martins of Saltus and Jocal Burgess of Berkeley marshalled their respective sides from the middle of the field. Karl Parfitt of Berkeley and Saltus' Terry Sousa were also impressive in defence.
Saltus scored a consolation goal late on through Martins.
Berkeley were also crowned Under-15 Knockout champions after finalists Warwick Academy failed to produce a side. Berkeley won the Under-15 League as well in commanding fashion, finishing the season with a perfect record.
