Bermuda suffer 4th loss
field to defeat newcomers Bermuda by eight wickets in their fourth round Shell/Sandals limited overs cricket match at Bourda yesterday.
It was Barbados' second win in Zone A and it left them still with a slim chance of qualifying for the final on October 19.
Bermuda suffered their fourth straight loss.
Replying to Bermuda's challenging 215 for eight off their allotted 50 overs, Barbados finished on 216 for two off 47.1 overs.
Barbados now join the Windward Islands on four points and must win their next two matches against Guyana and the Windwards to pose any sort of challenge to leaders Guyana.
Bermuda made a bold effort to defend their score but Barbados never found difficulty gathering runs and were aided by three dropped chances.
Barbados' victory was due to man-of-the-match Roland Holder's 60 not out off 79 balls with six fours plus the 54 from Adrian Griffith and 46 by Sherwin Campbell who retired hurt.
Holder was dropped on 21 by substitute Anthony Braithwaite at deep mid-wicket off Janeiro Tucker and Griffith was let off by wicketkeeper Dean Minors off Roger Blades when on four.
Griffith and Campbell posted 78 for the second wicket before Campbell retired when he injured his left thigh while completing a sharp single.
Griffith and Holder then further consolidated their position with a 40-run stand before Griffith's solid knock ended when he stroked Charlie Marshall to Jeff Richardson at mid-wicket. Floyd Reifer was unbeaten on 26 at the end.
Left arm spinner Winston Reid was again the pick of the Barbados bowlers with three for 17 off 10 probing overs. Off-spinner Ryan Hurley supported with one for 20 and paceman Joseph Williams took three for 33.
Bermuda's batting was centred around captain Albert Steede who with opener Roger Trott featured in the best stand, adding 63 for the second wicket.
Steede top scored with 47 off 76 balls with six fours before he was stumped by Courtney Browne off occasional off-spinner Reifer. Trott made 27 off 66 balls with two fours and Marshall 24 off 30 balls with three fours.
At Essequibo, Guyana beat the Windward Islands by eight wickets. Scores: Windwards 152-6 off 50 overs; Guyana 155-2 off 36.4 overs.
