Blakeney blitz sinks Warwick

St. David's 164-2 St. David's made short work of Warwick at Lord's yesterday, taking just 19.1 overs to reach their winning target, thanks to another half-century by Glenn Blakeney.

Blakeney scored 57 not out, including 11 fours and a six, while OJ Pitcher scored 34 not out off six boundaries during an unbroken third wicket stand which produced 80 runs in just nine overs.

Warwick did get an early breakthrough when Chris Foggo was caught by the diving Jason Williams at backward square leg for 10 when the score was 18. But a second wicket stand of 66 in just six overs put paid to any hopes of a Warwick upset as opener Phillip Pitcher struck 36.

Warwick, going through a rebuilding project headed by new coach Allan Douglas, posted 163 after an opening stand of 68 between Johnny Ball and Quinton King who led the scoring with 41.

Perry Scott contributed 27 in the middle order while Williams hit 21 before Warwick lost their last five wickets for just three runs.

Dale Fox claimed four for 19 from eight overs while captain Del Hollis took four for 21 off 8.2 overs.

Devonshire 187-8 Bailey's Bay 190-5 Irving Romaine smashed 71 not out to rescue Bailey's Bay from early trouble and set them on their way to a comfortable five-wicket win at Sea Breeze Oval.

Winston Trott Jr had Bay reeling at 47-4 after just five overs, taking the wickets of Jermaine Warner, Irving Burgess and captain Charlie Marshall, all for just four runs each, while new-ball partner Kanaz Tuzo dismissed Ricky Hill for 29.

The home team desperately needed a good stand and got it when Romaine and Stephen Outerbridge added 73 for the fifth wicket, the latter scoring 29 before he was trapped lbw by Omar Henry.

That wicket would be the last for Rec. as Romaine then found another willing partner in veteran Noel Gibbons who contributed 15 in their stand of 70 which wrapped up victory. Romaine's knock, which included a six to end the game, included seven fours and three sixes.

Trott was the pick of the Devonshire bowlers, taking three for 31 off eight overs.

Anthony Amory had earlier led Devonshire's batting with 79. Opening the batting with Wendell Swan, Amory hit four fours and three sixes to lead the way as rain reduced their innings to 43 overs. Rudolph Smith was the other main contributor with 20 while Ricardo Brangman scored 18.

Romaine claimed two for 13 and Ricky Hill two for 30.

Somerset Bridge 135 Cleveland 138-6 Somerset Bridge went down fighting at Wellington Oval against a Cleveland side missing key players Peter Philpott, Carlton Smith and captain Aaron Adams.

Bridge put a big effort into defending their modest 135, which they managed thanks to a last-wicket stand of 31 between number four bat Shannon Tankard (30 not out) and Malcolm Raynor (26). Opener Adrian Burrows, with 27, was the only other Bridge batsman in double figures.

Cleveland's weakened attack was led by opener Jeffrey Tyrrell's three for 36 and four for 33 from first-change Courtney Trott, both off nine overs.

Batting second on a damp wicket, Cleveland lost their first wicket with just seven runs on the board when Anthony Bascome was dismissed by Corvett Lambert.

Then after a second wicket stand of 32, Cleveland lost two quick wickets to be 45-3 before another useful stand, this one between Jason Simons (21) and Courtney Trott (26), posted the 100. The pair then departed in successive overs as Lambert had Trott smartly caught behind by Jermaine Nesbitt for 26.

Jeremy Fray and Johnny Richardson took the team to safety with a seventh wicket stand of 20 as Fray finished 14 not out. Lambert claimed three for 36 and Denzil Dill two for 19 for Bridge.

Glenn Blakeney: led St. David's with an unbeaten 57.
