Blazers bounce back after keeper's blunder

St. David's had a dream start to their first match back in the top flight yesterday only to crash to two goals from Boulevard's Shakia Crockwell.

A 30-yarder from Chae Simmons was fumbled into the net by Vernon Symonds after just two minutes.

But it was St. David's failure to test the stand-in keeper fully which let the Blazers back into a hugely entertaining match.

After the game both sides admitted that St David's had created enough chances to take all the points.

Boulevard's assistant manager Derek Scott said: "It was a good win and we are very pleased but either side could have won it.

"We had the wind against us in the second half but we defended well and contained them.'' St. David's manager Kenneth Bascome said: "We had enough chances to win it.

But if you don't take your chances you won't get anything in the top flight.'' His team had threatened in the first minute of this full-blooded thriller with Worrell Bean sneaking in at the back post only to head wide.

A minute later Chae Simmons pounced on the ball after a clumsy clearance by Boulevard keeper Vernon Symonds had cannoned off the back of his own defender.

Simmons worked himself some space and fired a speculative shot which Symonds misjudged and dropped over his shoulder.

Two minutes later good approach play by Simmons set up Kevin Lambe who blazed over.

After their early jitters Boulevard began to come back into it and could have equalised after Shakia Crockwell broke through only to fire tamely at the advancing keeper.

Crockwell made amends 10 minutes later when he lobbed the keeper from close range as Boulevard pressured the home side.

In the 37th-minute James Millard swung a perfect cross over the last Boulevard defender but Worrell Bean and Anthony Bartley got in each other's way and neither could get in a proper shot.

After the break St. David's stepped up a gear with Symonds saving well with his legs from Simmons' hard low shot.

In the 64th minute Symonds, standing in for Andre Hendrickson who is off the Island, dropped the ball but St. David's failed to take advantage.

Simmons then hit the bar after James Millard intercepted and played him through.

And it was Millard's through ball which Shane Weeks neatly controlled with his chest but the keeper kept it out.

St. David's nearly scored directly from the resulting corner as the ball swung in but Symonds managed to tip it over the bar.

Boulevard's Vernon Eve came close to settling it in the 80th minute but his well-struck free kick grazed the bar. Crockwell won the game for the visitors in 84th minute when the home goalkeeper miscalculated as he came out to make a clearance and left his net ungarded.

As he rushed back to the goal-line the ball fell to Crockwell who smashed it in to the empty net.
