Blazers edge basement battle
Boulevard had a good start to the new Millennium when Shakai Crockwell's well-taken goal in the first half separated the teams in this relegation battle at St. David's.
But things haven't changed for St. David's who started off the second half of the league campaign the same way they ended it -- losing -- though they did threaten to claim a share of the points with a better performance in the second half as they twice hit the crossbar.
Boulevard should have been leading by more than the one goal at the half after creating the bulk of the chances. The misses started for them as early as the fourth minute when Michael Holdipp put a free shot wide of the far post after being well placed.
Then a cross from the left by Stevie Wade saw Jahmel Samuels' shot turned around the post for a corner. Frustration was evident on Stevie Wade's face in the 26th minute when he did some good work inside the six-yard box before knocking in a short cross that rolled almost on the goal-line and across the face of the goal with no Boulevard player there to apply a simple tap in.
Frustration turned to smiles in the Boulevard camp when they finally broke the deadlock four minutes before the break. Holdipp backheeled to Samuels on the left and his perfectly flighted cross to the far post enabled Crockwell to get behind the defence and beat goalkeeper Sidney Minors with a smart header.
St. David's badly missed Lionel Cann's experience in attack -- he was attending a relative's funeral -- as OJ Minors, Chae Simmons and Worrell Bean battled for openings in the Boulevard defence.
Things started to improve for them midway through the second half when Simmons' corner on the right hit the crossbar with goalkeeper Kimwandae Walker in trouble. Then Bean robbed a defender before shooting over the top.
Lanky striker Keenan Butterfield should have equalised in the 75th minute when an opening was created for him to run through, only to miskick inside the box as he tried to shoot past the advancing Walker.
St. David's were enjoying their best period of the match now as they kept the pressure on. But Boulevard nearly put the match out of their reach with a second goal nine minutes from the end when 16-year-old substitute Zeno Warner went close on his first appearance in the Premier Division.
The youngster used his speed Blazers win to get past a hesitant Del Hollis and his lob over 'keeper Minors was just inches wide.
Two minutes later St. David's close for the last time when OJ Minors smashed a shot against the crossbar after the Boulevard defence gave him too much space.
Boulevard were relieved to hear Gary Cook's final whistle which confirmed their fourth win of the season. And with three other teams around them also winning it turned out to be a vital three points for Boulevard.
The loss now leaves St. David's 12 points adrift at the bottom.
