Blazers open defence like Trojans
A goal after 43 seconds by Clinton Caisey and another one minute into injury time was enough to send visiting Somerset Trojans tumbling to defeat in this FA Cup first round game at St. David's yesterday.
It proved sufficient to get champions Boulevard by easily with time and breath to spare in a game that saw last season's semifinalists from the west look more like lambs instead of the mighty cup-winning team for which they have become renowned.
Except for a brief period near the end when substitute forwards Kwame Tucker and Dwight Basden pushed powerfully forward to worry the defence with some penetrating runs, the Trojans were forced to play catch-up soccer.
Boulevard dominated so much of the play in the first half that victory should have been put out of Somerset's reach, but the Boulevard forwards just were unable to find the mark.
The Trojans were never able to recover from the early setback... and what a beautiful goal it was.
A throw-in by full-back Dean Boyles was received by Wade and the fiery forward's overhead kick went to Vernon Symonds in the middle who then lobbed it to the anxious Caisey. The ensuing volley, from just inside the penalty area, was spot on.
This smashed whatever cultured challenge the Trojans had hoped to build and for the rest of the half Boulevard pinned them down for long spells.
And when they did break through, Somerset's tame attack, which was without Rodney Bascome who was injured in a mid-week car crash, had no answer for the organised Boulevard defence.
But it proved to be a long period of frustration for the Boulevard forwards with skipper Dwight Warren and Amon Brown putting shots wide and striker Stevie Wade and Herbie Bascome blasting over the goal.
Wade was the real culprit when it came to misses, with his best chance being blown after 41 minutes when his shot was blocked by the advancing Antoine Swan in the Trojans goal and then bounced just inches wide of the post for a corner.
The second half started with Swan again doing well to hold onto a drive from Wade after 52 minutes. But the visitors came back and centre-half George Smith was in position to clear a shot from Lamaul Crofton off the goal-line.
Boulevard, though, continued to show their dominance and within a span of five minutes had two close calls with Brown and Wade slamming shots high over the bar.
Somerset, already showing more penetration with Basden coming on for Steval Arorash after the interval, brought on Kwame Tucker for Crofton after 70 minutes and the combination of Basden and Tucker started to deliver the punch up front that was desperately needed.
But with George Smith and Kenny Darrell marshalling the defence, Boulevard stood firm and held out -- although both Tucker and Basden powered shots wide and high respectively after 84 minutes.
Confidence was restored in Somerset's game near the end but Wade tore their hopes apart when, during a quick counter-attack, he combined with substitute Kenny Hill to score from close range with precious little time left.
Boulevard coach Gary Mallory admitted that his team made it look hard on a day when they were in control, but he was nevertheless pleased with the result.
"We missed a lot of chances in the first half, but the main thing is that we came away victorious,'' said Mallory.
