Bridge surprise Parish

Terry Burgess returned his best bowling figures of the season -- four for 47 --

Terry Burgess returned his best bowling figures of the season -- four for 47 -- and Brian Morris hit a career-best 63 not out but they still could not prevent home team Somerset Bridge from picking up their first win of the season by 14 runs at White Hill field.

A third-wicket stand of 71 between captain David Jones (46) and Brian Gibbons (41) rescued Bridge from 23 for two before Bernard Dowling hit 25 in the middle order and wicket-keeper Leroy Brangman 21 in the tail-end to take them to their winning total.

Burgess' four-wicket haul came in 15.4 overs as he came back to claim the last wicket of Brangman. Spinner Cal Burgess took two for 63 while Phillip Bailey and Brian Morris got one wicket each.

Parish also lost their first wicket on five when captain Ricky Hill, opening for the league team for the first time this season, was caught by Robin Swan off Francis Richardson. Millard Bean (20) and Dennis Trott (13) added 38 valuable runs for the second wicket before Bridge grabbed three quick wickets to put Parish on the rack at 50 for four. And then after losing their fifth wicket on 62, sixth and seventh-wicket stands of 43 kept the game in the balance as Parish tried to protect their unbeaten record.

Ashton Outerbridge hit 37 as Gary Crofton had impressive figures of five for 35 from 13 overs while Eugene Burgess took two for 47 in support.

Devonshire Rec. 268-5 dec.

Somerset 134-5 Albert Steede strengthened his status as the form batsman of the early season with his second century against hosts Somerset.

Steede struck an unbeaten 123 off 163 balls to lead the league champions into a position of strength, against a flailing Somerset attack.

But a perfect day for the visitors was ruined by the home team's batting line-up who also professed a liking to the kind Somerset strip.

When play was stopped by bad light with 15 overs remaining, skipper Andre Manders was not out on 37 with Gladwin Edness the new batsman on three in six overs.

For Rec's bowling attack it was Leon Place who again threatened to turn the match. Place had a five-wicket haul against Southampton last week and had a spell of three for no runs from his second through fifth overs as Somerset collapsed from 110 for two.

Place finished with three for 16 from eight overs while Anthony Edwards was a workhorse claiming one for 50 in 14.3 overs.

Davon Wade was Somerset's top bat with 57 from 77 balls. His innings, which lasted 107 minutes, included 10 fours. Donovan Livingston made 23.

Despite falling 11 points behind leaders Bailey's Bay, Devonshire should be satisfied with the form of Steede and skipper Anthony Amory, who rebounded from last week's first-ball duck to score 53.

Steede's innings lasted three hours and 22 minutes as he batted from the second over, when Donald Norford was run out without scoring, until the declaration came at the tea interval.

Steede crashed 18 fours while Amory hit four fours and three sixes. Pace chipped in with 38 and Edwards was 20 not out.

Shannon Warner claimed two for 55 from 14 overs for Somerset.

St. David's 77 Bailey's Bay 79-2 After Clarkie Trott, Anthony Braithwaite and Noel Gibbons skidded out St.

David's for their second straight low score at Sea Breeze Oval, dashing left-hander Glenn Smith completed the easy win with a quick 32 not out in just 20 minutes.

The Islanders, who were dismissed for 90 by another Eastern Counties team (Cleveland) last weekend, went down to their lowest total of the season after failing to come to grips with the Bay bowling. Things never turned around for them after losing their first wicket, that of top bat Allen Richardson with just eight runs on the board in the fourth over.

Three overs later, Shea Pitcher departed and when the next four wickets fell on 35, 35, 36 and 39 it was evident St. David's were going to have another miserable day at the crease.

Their last four wickets fell for just 14 runs, including the last three for four in the 39th, 40th and 41st overs, as Gibbons finished with three for five from five overs, Trott three for 22 from 16 and Braithwaite, the first change, three for 36.

St. David's captain Ken Pitcher was their high man with 15 while John Pitcher with 12 was the only other bat in double figures.

Smith was in another no-nonsense mood, scoring 32 of the 34 runs he and Charlie Marshall (13 not out) put on for the third wicket to take Bay to their fifth straight win. Opener Devrae Hollis scored 23.

SATURDAY Somerset Select 134 Bermuda Select 93 Fast bowler Rodney Fubler claimed four for 15 and Anthony Edwards took three for 19 as Somerset's Cup Match Select defeated the Bermuda national team by 41 runs in a Cup Match trial game at Somerset CC on Saturday.

The national team came up short in their chase after the winning target of 135 when tail-ender Kenny Phillips had to report to work and therefore could not bat.

But it was not a good batting day for his team-mates anyway who struggled against Fubler and Edwards. Noel Gibbons was high scorer with 26 while opener Wendell Smith followed with a laborious 16 -- which saw him bat for 114 minutes. Charlie Marshall and Clevie Wade each scored 12.

Perry Maybury led the Somerset batsmen with 29, Fubler followed with 13 and Ricky Hill 12. Allan Brangman took four for 17, Gary Brangman two for 27 and Arnold Manders two for 31.
