Campbell strike stuns BAA

A late goal by Clevie Campbell prevented hosts BAA from moving off the bottom of the First Division at BAA Field yesterday.

Just when it looked as though last-placed BAA would deservedly come away with their second win over Cougars in the league this season, the visitors' big forwards, Campbell and Phillip Clarke, teamed up to deliver the killer blow.

With just three minutes left in the game, and with the 10-man BAA team under intense pressure -- forward Dennis Davis having been sent off after 72 minutes -- Clarke crossed from the right and found Campbell who hammered the ball home from just inside the penalty box.

In a game riddled with mistakes it looked as though an early goal by defender Norman Correia would be sufficient to carry BAA to victory, especially with Cougars offering no real threat in attack until the closing stages.

Correia worried Cougars when his diving header was sensationally pushed around the post by goalkeeper Leon Place after 16 minutes. Shortly after the resulting corner the defender was in position to slam the ball home from about 13 yards.

BAA continued to hold their own against the wind for the rest of the half while Cougars were surprisingly quiet and accomplished little in terms of creativity up front.

Frustration set in for Cougars when midfielder Dale Russell and Clarke resorted to taking long shots that sailed high over the goal.

BAA were just as inept when they attacked at the opposite end, but their raids broke down as a result of the many misdirected passes when their forwards reached the penalty box.

Cougars were unlucky two minutes before the half when Russell found Clarke and the big forward's fierce volley from 15 yards was saved by the diving Dwayne Adams.

Cougars took the initiative during the early stages of the second half with Campbell blasting a shot over after 52 minutes and Adams alertly advancing off his line to block Clarke three minutes later after the forward had slipped through the defence to meet a defence-splitting pass from Wali Salaam.

But play deteriorated for a long period afterwards with both attacks looking out of touch and showing little imagination once within shooting range of goal.

Davis ruined a chance to giving BAA a 2-0 lead when he put a rebound over an empty goal from just six yards out -- the opportunity arriving after Place had come off his line to brilliantly block Tito Smith who was through on a breakaway.

Once Davis had been ejected for his second bookable offence after 72 minutes, when he handled the ball deep in the BAA half, Cougars slowly clawed their way into the game against their now 10-man opponents.

Wali Salaam blasted a shot inches wide of the post from 16 yards and Campbell put another good effort just over from the same distance.

But just when it looked as if the BAA defence, marshalled by Correia, would prevail, Campbell ran free to stun them with his late equaliser.
