Carr, Trott named for Team Worlds
Tim Carr and Hav Trott have been called up to fill the void left by Robert Vallis and Robbie Spurling who announced last week they wouldn't be available to represent Bermuda at next month's World Amateur Team Championships in the Philippines.
Policeman Carr, a finalist in this year's Bermuda Match Play Championships at Mid Ocean, had originally been overlooked by the Bermuda Golf Association selection committee despite finishing among the top four on the Order or Merit.
But committee chairman Brendan (Bees) Ingham confirmed yesterday that the Englishman had now accepted a late invitation as had Bermudian Trott, a former Belmont Invitational winner who returned to the Island a couple of years ago after a lengthy spell in England.
Ingham noted that Blake Marshall and university student Duncan Zelkin had also been approached following the withdrawal of Vallis and Spurling, but both had declined the offer.
The bi-ennial world team championships for men are due to start at the Manila Southwoods Golf and Country Club on November 14. A Bermuda ladies' team of Kim Marshall, Pat Morgan and Judithanne Astwood will take part in the women's team championship at the St. Elena Golf Club in Manila on November 7.
Vallis, who had earlier turned down an offer to captain the Bermuda men's team, cited personal reasons for his withdrawal while Spurling informed the BGA he would be tied up with university studies.
Carr and Trott team up with Henry Ascento, who represented Bermuda at the last championships two years ago in Paris, and Ocean View manager Bill Pitt.
The four players will compete against many of the world's top amateurs over 72 holes with the best three scores counting towards the team total.
