Centre move into pole position
Tennis League First Division with a 6-5 victory in the top-of-the-table clash with Old Colony Club I.
With four matches remaining for both clubs, The Centre are in pole position, having won 11 games out of 12 for 22 points, two points ahead of reigning champions OCC I.
The Centre have a 12-game advantage in the games won and lost columns, having won 108 and lost 24, compared to OCC I's record of 96-36.
Hasan Durham and Cory Berkeley won two matches for the Centre and Roderick Masters one. For OCC I, Nick Frost won three matches and Neil Slater one, while the teams split the doubles matches.
Durham came back from 8-14 down in the third game to win a crucial match against Slater.
The teams meet again on the last night of the league programme.
Also in the top flight, BPSA beat Prison Officers 8-3, with Rawle Frederick and Myron Piper winning all their three matches for BPSA.
In the Second Division, Eastern Stars took over from OCC II at the top of the table by beating them 8-3. Five matches went to three games in a hard-fought series.
Veteran Craig Trott had a great night for the Stars, winning his three singles matches and assisting in winning both doubles matches too.
Team-mate Kevin Lapsley won two and Perry Swan upset Chris Fleming. Swan lost to Trevor Elliott and Jan Britchfield, while Fleming beat Lapsley.
Both teams have three matches left, with Stars on 14 points and OCC II on 12.
The teams clash again on the last night of the league programme, at St.
George's Cricket Club, on March 16.
SCHOOLS IN SQUASH TOURNEY SQU Schools in squash tourney Seventeen teams of schoolchildren took part in the fourth Commercial Risk Inter-Schools Squash Team Tournament at the Bermuda Squash Racquets Association.
In Division Three, a team of eight-year-olds, the Saltus Bulldogs (Mark James, Alexander McManus and Robert Maycock) won all of their four matches.
Mega-Mix, a combination team of Gary Furtado (Warwick Academy), Cory Brangman (Paget Primary) and Tyler Smith (Gilbert Institute) came a close second with three wins.
Division Two saw eight teams battle for the championship in two round-robin divisions and then a play-off final, in which the Saltus Thrashers (Phillippe Froncioni, Andrew Masters and Alistair Melvin) pipped the Spice Valley Sun Dogs (Jordan Smith, Marco Piper and Alex De Couto) 37-36.
Whitney `No Limit' (Sherwon Ible, Aaron Simons and Kevoni Simmons) snatched the bronze medal from Saltus `Lady and the Tramps' (Laura Robinson, Chris Sgobba and Matthew Godfrey) with a 42-33 win.
And Team All Sports with Stephen Smith (CedarBridge Academy), Richard Arnold (Spice Valley and Sean Harvey (Warwick Academy) edged a 36-35 win over the Saltus I team of T.J. Clark, Jessica Mitchell and Iain Redford.
JAMES LEADS JUNIORS WITH 77 GLF James leads juniors with 77 Aaron James again showed his calibre as one of the Island's top young golfers by firing a 77 on the Ocean View course last weekend -- using only four clubs.
As part of their course management training with Bermuda Junior Golf Association, the youngsters were asked to select any three clubs, plus a putter, to play a round.
James, 14, selected a driver, a seven-iron and a sand wedge and in blustery conditions last Saturday, with winds gusting to gale force, he bagged birdies at the third, 10th and 17th holes.
David Smith finished four shots behind James in second, with Jarryd Dillas third a further shot back.
Among the seniors (15-plus age group), Ryan Mello led the way with a 79, just edging Quinton Sherlock on retrogression. Chris Smith's 81 earned him third place.
In the 12 and under age group, Tyler Marshall took the honours with a 44 to edge Brian Smith on retrogression and Marco Smith came third on 51.
