Classic attracts top overseas riders

putting together the final plans for the third Bermuda Classic Show Jumping competition which is scheduled for today and tomorrow at the Botanical Gardens.

The event, which began in 1991 and has been held every other year, has quickly established itself as the Island's premier equestrian competition, with top riders from around the world here to compete for over $20,000 in prize money.

Once again the event promises plenty of excitement as about 40 of Bermuda's best riders compete against the stars from overseas. Competition begins today at 9.30 a.m. and tomorrow at 10 a.m., the highlights including the Bermuda Commercial Bank Team Cup at 2.00 today and the Somers Mortgage and Finance Grand Prix tomorrow at the same time.

Both main events will follow dressage demonstrations which are scheduled for 1.00 each day featuring Bermuda resident Suzanne Ericsson of Ocean View Farm and well-known rider Chris Taylor.

The five overseas riders include France's Herve Godignon who is ranked seventh in the world and was a bronze medal team winner at the 1992 Olympic Games.

Also participating will be Cmdt. Gerry Mullins of Ireland, who is the holder of the FEI gold medal for the Nations Cup and a Team European bronze medallist and the leading rider at Wembley earlier this year.

Beth Underhill, who is ranked number one in Canada and 14th in the world is another top contender along with Chris Kappler of the United states who has a total of 33 Grand Prix wins, winning his first at the age of 18.

Jeffrey Welles, also of the United States, was ranked second in the AGA rider of the year standings in 1989 and has made seven Nations Cup appearances.

Nick Skelton of England was a late withdrawal.
