Coach Horton attacked by angry sub

Somerset scored a dramatic late winner through Michael Brangman to end a run of nine games without a win stretching back to last October against the same team.

But yesterday's win at PHC Stadium was overshadowed by an incident on the Somerset bench between substitute Clifton Anderson and coach Randy Horton in the 75th minute which held up the game for a couple of minutes.

Anderson, angry at not being brought on after warming up since the start of the second half, finally exploded and took his frustration out on his coach.

First he voiced his displeasure to Horton and then he dumped a bucket of ice on him before kicking the team's medicine kit as the incident took centre stage. Referee Stuart Crockwell stopped the match and came over to check the situation.

Just a few weeks ago Somerset were the opponents when Hotels pair Diallo Sharrieff and Dion Wainwright began fighting. This incident was just as embarrassing for the Trojans who are also battling against relegation.

Anderson has been in and out of the team in recent weeks, coming on as a substitute in the match against Hotels and playing well enough to start the next game against Devonshire Cougars when he was substituted.

He was on the bench for the last two games and after sensing he wasn't going to be brought on yesterday he took his frustration out on the coach whom he blamed for the team's plight.

It was from time added on that Somerset scored the winning goal with the last kick of the game. PHC, who a minute earlier had defender Shawn Smith sent off for a second bookable offence, conceded a free kick on the edge of the penalty area two minutes into injury time.

Before the kick was taken PHC brought on defender Mike Dill for Stephen Astwood. Sean Simmons flighted the free kick to the far post where Shaun Riley headed the ball across goal and goalkeeper Quincy Hunt was knocked over by Mike Dill as they both went up for the ball.

Brangman scrambled the ball over the line to seal three crucial points for the Trojans in this bottom-of-the-table clash. The final whistle sounded before the game could be restarted.

Somerset had the better of the chances in the second half as they went in search of the winner.

Play was more even in the first half when both teams had an excellent chance to take the lead. Somerset's David Burchall was presented with a gift by Hunt when he miskicked his clearance from a backpass in the 18th minute. But Burchall's first shot from near the edge of the box bounced off the body of Hunt before his second, goal-bound effort was booted clear by Shawn Smith.

In the 34th minute PHC had their best chance to take the lead when the ball broke to Jamal Robinson on the right side of the box but his shot was blocked by the legs of 'keeper Winslow Williams before being cleared.

Hotels 0 Vasco 3 Vasco returned to the top of the First Division on goal difference over Boulevard as Hotels remained close to the relegation zone after this defeat yesterday.

Dwight Basden opened the scoring for Vasco in the 10th minute following a move on the right side. Ottis Steede played the ball to the near post and Basden beat a defender to the ball before scoring.

Hotels had a good chance just before that goal when, from a free kick, Diallo Sharrieff forced goalkeeper Timmy Figureido to tip the ball over the bar.

Sharrieff did find the net in the 27th minute, but unfortunately for Hotels it was in the wrong net, as the big defender scored with an own goal from a corner.

Vasco missed a penalty in the closing minutes of the half when Sharrieff brought down Basden. Steede placed his spot kick straight at the goalkeeper Stefan Dupres.

Clay Smith made certain of the points for Vasco four minutes after the restart when he beat Dupres and a defender to a long ball and lifted the ball over Dupres and into the goal.
