For the second time this week Bermuda's embattled Technical Director of Coaching Burkhard Ziese has come under fire.

Earlier this week he faced a heavy barrage of criticism from North Village coach Richard Calderon and this time it's assistant coach of Devonshire Colts David Furbert who has lashed out at Ziese, currently in Jamaica with the Bermuda Under-23 team.

In a letter to the sports editor (see page 27) Furbert has questioned Ziese's role in local soccer and declared that he is a "highly paid coach who has done nothing'' during the year he has been in Bermuda.

"He has not done the job he was hired to do, he will prove to be one of the worst financial investments that we have put into our youth.'' Ziese's remarks in an interview last week, when he compared the local coaching fraternity to "an African market place'' fired up Calderon and has caused the sports minister Pamela Gordon to ask the BFA to launch an investigation.

"He has no respect for Bermudians, particularly black Bermudians. I speak from a personal experience after having met with him. I found him totally disrespectful, arrogant and rude,'' wrote Furbert.

When contacted yesterday Furbert said that he had long been turned off by Ziese and the fact that the German has consistently been surrounded by controversy should make everybody question if he continues to be the right man for the job.

"Bermuda must wake up, we do not need this type of influence in this country.

There are too many people who are questioning Mr. Ziese, let's face it.

Bermudians don't just criticise people for no reason,'' said Furbert.

Furbert admitted to have shared many of the views expressed by Calderon, and wondered what Ziese's daily routine is like.

"Previously the coaches were required to scout, coach and draw players from various schools. To my knowledge this man doesn't do anything like that, usually he is at the BFA offices just poking around. One wonders what he does for the $50,000 net that he is being paid,'' said Furbert.

"He is here to develop the game, but all he seems to be doing is giving the BFA directions. He should be formulating a programme for the entire Island, something that the association, clubs and schools can adapt to. He's been here well over a year and nothing of this nature has been done,'' he added.

According to Furbert, Bermuda will not lose anything if Ziese was to terminate his contract now and leave the Island.

Should this happen, where should Bermuda search for a replacement? "From the reports I have gathered the Brazilian coach that we last had here for brief coaching courses received good reports from our coaches. Perhaps the time has come for us to get somebody from a South American country.''
