Contest hang onto Fitted Dinghy lead

was twice forced to retire failed to change the leading positions in this year's race for the Coronation Cup yesterday.

Racing in shifty winds in St. George's Harbour, Contest and Challenger each recorded a first and third place, ensuring that Contest maintained a six and a half point lead over her rival at the end of the day.

In the first race for the E.R.Williams Cup, Elizabeth , with Willie White at the helm, sunk after suffering a broken spinnaker pole and Port Royal , skippered by Brett Wright, had to retire after a collision with Challenger .

But Challenger , guided by Paul Fisher, was none the worse for the incident and went on to win with Victory taking second place followed by Contest and Echo .

The second race for the Middleton Shield, over a changed course, was delayed when Echo , skippered by Martin Siese, sunk just before the start. Port Royal took an early lead but was forced to retire, leaving Andreas Lewin to guide Contest across the line first, followed by Elizabeth , Challenger , Victory and Echo .

COLLIESON CAPTURES GATE TITLE TEN Collieson captures Gate title James Collieson captured the boys' Under-18 division of the Ace/Pomander Gate junior tennis tournament with a 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 triumph over Quinton Burgess at the weekend.

Collieson, back in Bermuda and taking a summer break from his studies near Atlanta, enjoyed his breakthrough victory a week ago over Michael Way in the Shell Tennis Challenge.

Winner of the Under-16s was Robert Kowalczyk over Jenson Bascome 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).

Scott McLeod topped John Hindess 6-3, 7-5 to grab the Under-14 division while Ethan Branum defeated Christen Hartnett 10-5 to sew up the Under-12s.

Claudia Haegele proved unbeatable among the Under-18 girls. She won the first set of her match against Danielle Paynter 6-2 and was leading 2-1 in the second when Paynter retired. Paynter gained solace, however, by winning Under-14s while Tara Lambert was runner-up.

LOOBY FAILS IN WORLDS BID CYC Looby fails in Worlds bid Bermuda cyclist McInnis Looby failed in his first bid to qualify for the World Amateur Championships in Colombia later this year when he finished almost a minute down on the leader in a 92-mile road race in New York State yesterday.

Racing in the Fulton County Cup, a Pro 1-2 category event which started near Syracuse, Looby led home a chasing pack to take 59th position in a starting field of 103. But at the finish he was just under a minute behind the leader, having lost time in the final few miles.

"I didn't ride smart,'' Looby admitted last night. "I was too agressive early in the race and I paid for that later. I guess I'm satisfied in some ways, but I think I could have ridden better.'' Next weekend Looby takes part in a three-day stage race, strating in Olean, New York.

ROAD RUNNING RUN ROAD RUNNING The annual St. George's Weight Handicap 5K road race and fitness walk is set for tomorrow evening, starting from King's Square at 7.00 p.m. Organised by the Mid Atlantic Athletic Club, the event determines its winners by dividing the runners' time in seconds by their weight in pounds.

Because of the Weight Handicap race, tomorrow's weekly MAAC fun run at the Botanical Gardens has been cancelled.

TENNIS TEN TENNIS The Sonesta Beach Singles Tennis Classic, postponed in April, has been rescheduled for August 30, with the finals due to take place on September 9.

CRICKET CRI St. George's will play the touring Conway Cricket Club of Massachusetts tomorrow at Wellington Oval beginning at noon.
