Cup champs Vasco made to struggle

Reigning FA Cup champions Vasco were forced to sweat it out against Commercial League side BAA Wanderers in this FA Cup third round clash at BAA Field yesterday.

It took two goals in the second half for the Portuguese team to finally brush aside the challenge of their determined opponents -- both coming within a span of two minutes.

Dwight Basden netted the first after about 60 minutes when he smartly headed home a corner. And then Dennis Robinson put the game out of reach when he latched onto a rebound and hammered the ball home from close range.

Wanderers had been kept in the game by some goalkeeping heroics from John Doran in the first half when he denied the champions success time and time again. Two superb saves prevented what appeared to be certain goals.

St.George's All-Stars 0 Dandy Town 7 Dandy Town poured in three goals in the first half and another four after the interval as they completely outclassed their Commercial League opponents at Wellington Oval.

The First Division leaders played most of the game with 10 players after having star striker Darron Simons sent off by referee George O'Brien for using foul language.

His departure after 40 minutes, however, didn't halt the goal rush.

McLee Smith, Dano Outerbridge (penalty) and Earl Bean put Town ahead 3-0 before the half.

And then the Hornets added more goals in the second half from Smith (57 minutes), Lionel Furbert (68 minutes), Kris Martin (71 minutes) and Wolde Place (85 minutes).

Boulevard 6 Robin Hood 2 (after extra-time) A late hat-trick by Dwight Warren saved First Division side Boulevard from embarrassment against their spirited Commercial League opponents at Lord's.

The floodgates finally opened in extra-time as Hood tired and conceded four quick goals, having held their opponents to 2-2 in regulation time.

Hood stunned the Blazers early, taking a 2-0 lead after 27 minutes on goals by Mike Stenhouse.

Boulevard pulled one back by the half with Taur Caisey scoring after 39 minutes.

And they were made to work hard for the equaliser, finally drawing even just three minutes from the final whistle when Warren received a long ball from his defence and nipped through to score.

Hood wilted under the pressure in extra-time although there were no goals in the first 15 minutes.

After five minutes of the second period, substitute Dan Miller scored an own goal to make it 3-2 and three more goals from Warren (2) and Shakai Crockwell killed off Hood, some of whose players began to suffer from cramp.

North Village 4 Belco 0 North Village made hard work of Commercial side Belco at St. John's Field where the cup minnows restricted them to a mere one-goal lead in the first half.

Neil Robinson got Village's opening goal after 24 minutes, but Belco were able to match them for the rest of the half.

But as Belco tired in the second half, Village took full command and scored three times through Robinson, Sergio Goater and sub Devon DeGraffe.

Devonshire Cougars 2 Paget 0 At Devonshire Rec. home side Cougars found Second Division Paget a handful before pulling away for a two-goal triumph.

Scoring for Cougars were Galvin Butterfield and Ryan Swan.
