Dandy town hit team champion for six

Town carried away the Kenny Thompson Seven-A-Side Trophy as tournament champions courtesy of an exciting 6-3 victory over pre-game favourites Team Champion.

Action was fast and furious in this goal feast at the Southampton Glebe School. Like a pendulum, action swung from end to end with neither the youthful Champion nor the more experienced Town giving anything away.

Early on a cross from the right found the boot of Frankie Simmons a yard in front of Champion's goal and the Town forward just managed to force the ball across on his second attempt for the early lead.

Champion roared back however, equalising through Craig Darrell, who managed to get one past Town keeper, Troy Durham. Champion began to turn up the pressure further and surged ahead on a strike by Maceo Dill.

At this point Champion were in full flow and appeared as if they might run away with things, but Town dug into their resources to score two straight, taking a 3-2 lead. Tournament Most Valuable Player, Devarr Boyles showed some deft touches in lobbing the keeper for the first and Pernell Douglas connected with a text book header of a left-wing cross for the second.

Just before halftime, midfield schemer Frank Ming brought Champion level, turning in a cross past a maze of players.

With renewed strength both sides came out for the second half, but Town first wobbled their opponents with a tally by leading scorer -- eight -- Troy Lewis and floored them with one by Walter Musson moments later.

Champion fought on but Musson, voted Man of the Match, put a final stamp on the proceedings with a superb final goal, a rocket from 10 yards that gave 'keeper Shawn Russell no chance.

Nelson Bascome MP gave a speech at the awards ceremony following and Miss Bermuda Islands contestants presented awards which included trophies for the first three teams and gold and silver medals for the top two. Bernie Woods also was rewarded as the tournament's best goalkeeper.

"I was quite happy with the attendance and commitment from the players this year...it was higher than in previous years,'' said organiser Kenny Thompson, who has been running the tournament the last three years.

"Hopefully it (tournament) will continue to grow.'' Earlier Team Iraklis defeated Southampton 2-1 for third place honours, Rodney (Key) Bascome and George Cann netted for the victors, while Ascento Russell replied for Southampton.
