Doomed St. David's face player exodus

St. David's lost their battle against relegation yesterday and now have a fight on their hands to keep their best players.

Manager Kenny Bascome admitted his star striker Chae Simmons was getting itchy feet now that the team are doomed to the First Division after a single season in the top flight.

"We have a young team and hopefully the guys will stick together,'' said Bascome. "I hope we can keep Chae -- he's getting restless. We have had a number of approaches from teams so I will sit down and hopefully persuade him to stay.'' And Bascome was blunt about what had led to the drop.

"I've said on a number of occasions that we let in too many goals. It's difficult in this league -- we have to be tougher. But I will still be here next season.'' Club President Wilber Pitcher questioned the commitment of some of his players. "Some players just want to train when they feel like it,'' he said.

Despite their dismal season, which has netted just a solitary point so far, St. David's began this game far brighter than their opponents.

The homes side's direct approach nearly undid Colts on several occasions in the opening minutes with the visitors failing to judge long balls.

Lionel Cann struck a hard low shot from distance when put clear through when he might have done better to advance further before shooting.

After just 12 minutes Otis Minors pounced from close range after the visitors had failed to clear a corner. And the home side could have gone two up eight minutes later when a super save from Troy Hall kept out a fierce close range drive.

Colts lacked direction in midfield, instead being forced to ape St. David's frenetic style rather than slow things down and dictate play.

However, a Chevon Hill lob put Colts back into it after the keeper had found himself stranded coming for a bouncing high ball.

And Colts could have ended the half ahead but Shannon Burgess' spot kick, after Jermaine Aberdeen had been felled in the box, pinged the post.

Colts began the second half much brighter with only an excellent last-ditch tackle preventing Ricky Saltus from scoring.

A superb solo goal by substitute Marvin Belboda put Colts in the lead.

Belboda, on for Romond Douglas, dribbled past several players and coolly held onto the ball before slotting home after rounding the keeper.

Minutes later Belboda tried to dribble the ball into the net and very nearly made it after cutting in from the left.

Ricky Saltus made the third for himself. He robbed defender Delano Hollis on the right and then made a beeline for goal before firing past a static keeper at the near post.

Chevon Hill scored number four for Colts in the 80th minute after a delightful one-two with Nathan Samuels.

But St. David's never gave up -- a Lionel Cann effort was cleared off the line and in the dying seconds Worrell Bean weaved his way through the visitors defence before finding the net. Bean was bizarrely substituted immediately after though his replacement barely got onto the pitch before the final whistle blew.
