Early goals earn Trojans victory
Two first half goals by substitute Keion Simmons and Lamaul Crofton proved sufficient for visiting Somerset Trojans to come away with a victory in this Friendship Trophy clash at Devonshire Rec. last night.
On both occasions it was skipper Andrew Rahman who set up the goals.
After 22 minute Rahman worked his way down the right flank before crossing for Simmons to score from close range and then after 30 minutes his floated pass into the middle put speedy striker Crofton through to steer the ball home from close range.
But despite the two-goal lead, Somerset were forced to fight hard for the victory -- and only poor finishing by Cougars prevented the game from going into extra-time.
Cougars' striker Aljame Zuill missed with a header after 33 minutes when he was just 10 yards out and Cougars could only watch in agony as Kevin Simpson's fierce blast from 18 yards struck the bar and sailed over goal after 43 minutes.
The inevitable goal for Cougars came after 58 minutes when Stephen Codrington combined with Raynel Lightbourne with Codrington finishing the move from 12 yards to make it 2-1.
Somerset staged periodic attacks with their best chance coming after 60 minutes when Crofton's shot was blocked by goalkeeper Leon Place after the forward slipped through on a breakaway.
But for the rest of the game Cougars pinned down their opponents and saw Williams in the Trojans goal pull off two fine saves, first diving to keep out a header from Shawn Smith and then pushing a header from Zuill around the post for a corner.

Parish 4 Hamilton Parish fired a pair of goals in each half to cruise through this Shield Competition match at BAA Field last night.
Parish stamped their authority on the game from the opening whistle with Pedro Madeiros hitting the target after just two minutes. And in the 43rd minute Clevon Hill doubled their lead.
Jerome Richards offered Eagles a lifeline when he netted from the penalty spot in the 48th minute but just eight minutes later Shawn Dill restored Parish's two goal advantage. It was Dill who completed the scoring in the 78th minute with his second and Parish's fourth goal.
Eagles might have reduced the arrears near the end but Parish goalkeeper Kevin Bean pulled off a good save from Frank Smith.
Forties 4 St.G.Allstars 2 (after extra time) Goals in either period of extra-time by Brian Fubler and Cooley Robinson finally killed off Allstars in the replay of this FA Cup tie at BAA Field last night.
Fubler scored from the spot after being bundled over and Robinson poked home after a fortunate ricochet.
Myron Pifner had earlier given Forties the lead after 16 minutes, shooting through keeper Dwayne Trott's hands after shrugging off two players on the edge of the box.
But Allstars were level a quarter of an hour later when Calvin Raynor scored a beautiful goal. He took advantage of a slip by centre back Brett Michaelson, rounded Renoit Marande and slipped the ball low to Prospero Russo's left from 15 yards.
Six minutes into the second half Forties were ahead again when Steve Garratt and Robinson linked well to put Fubler in to score.
Sinclair Smith almost equalised immediately, but moments later he was upended a yard inside the area and Delbert Minors sent Russo the wrong way from the Ispot.
