East Enders race to easy win

St. George's 82-0 St. George's needed just 59 minutes to wrap up victory after short-handed Nationals proved no match at Wellington Oval yesterday.

Nationals, only able to field nine players, found themselves in trouble soon after being sent into bat by the home team, losing their first two wickets on 11 and 12 and the third and fourth on 34 and 35.

A fifth wicket stand of 34 -- their biggest -- in 30 minutes between stand-in captain Graham Strange (21) and Alleyne Francis (23) briefly halted the slide before wickets began falling again to some tidy St. George's bowling.

Opener Dennis Trott was the only other Nationals batsmen in double figures, scoring 19 in 98 minutes before he was third out.

Troy Bean took the first two Nationals wickets, trapping Alan Corcoran and Roderick Masters lbw on his way to figures of two for 25 including nine maidens while spinner David Adams claimed two for 10 from 9.4 overs. The Nationals innings lasted 43.2 overs between 11.31 and 2.20 p.m.

St. George's openers Wendell Smith and Eugene Foggo needed less than an hour to clinch yesterday's only win in the Premier Division. Smith stroked six fours and two sixes for 50 not out while Foggo hit four fours in his unbeaten 24.

Willow Cuts 228 Western Stars 54-2 Sporadic rain ensured a tame draw in the match of the day, pitting Willow Cuts against unbeaten Western Stars at St. John's Field yesterday.

The visitors posted a respectable score of 228 in their time at the wicket, with Rodney Fubler, more renowned for his bowling exploits, showing good form with the bat at number eight as he top scored with 82.

Fubler, in an innings lasting a minute more than three hours, stroked nine fours and a six before Wayne Richardson induced a catch to Gregory Sampson with his left arm spin.

Prior to Fubler, Davon Wade recorded his highest tally of the year with a half century, scoring a painstaking 54 that encompassed two fours and two sixes.

Brothers Allan and Gary Brangman led Stars' bowling attack with three wickets apiece, the former claiming three for 53 from 19 overs, while the latter returned figures of three for 37 from 12. Richardson ended with two for 55, while Hasan Durham claimed one for 58 from 21.5 overs.

With the disruption of frequent downpours, Stars were never in with a chance at chasing the posted target, losing the wickets of Treadwell Gibbons and Sampson on their way to 54, before play was halted by another shower combined with fading light.

Fubler and Alan Wilkinson each took a wicket as the game petered out into a tame draw.
