East out to avenge '92 drubbing

players displaying their wares in the annual Primary and Secondary Schools All-Star matches at the National Stadium (6 p.m.) In the latter match (7.30 p.m. start) the East, coached by Jon Beard, will go into the game looking to avenge last year's 5-0 drubbing at the hands of the West led by two goals from Janeiro Tucker.

While the West were regarded as the more experienced outfit the previous time the sides met it is the East who will carry six players with previous All-Star experience into tonight's match.

Tafari Outerbridge, Sean Simmons and Keimon and Dyke Lawrence all of Berkeley Institute and Whitney's Nakia Smith and Jermel Belboda were all members of Manders' 1992 squad and look to be key players as they strive to regain the series lead, which stands at eight victories apiece.

Smith has appeared regularly for local club side Port Royal in the Second Division and is equally adept at forward or in defence but will likely be called on to lead the attack.

Another with senior level experience is midfielder/forward Keimon Lawrence, who has played infrequently for First Division leaders Devonshire Colts.

"I don't think that we have any real individual stars but players that have to be able to play together as a team,'' said Beard. "I'm convinced that if we stick to what we've been practising and maintain a team pattern we'll be home and dry.

"Basically it'll come down to what happens on the night and the willingness of the players to work for each other.'' However, Radell Tankard's men from the west will not be pushovers as they also boast quite an array of talent.

The most notable is Kwame Tucker of Sandys Secondary School. Tucker gained instant prominence late last year when he scored the winning goal for Somerset in the Martonmere Cup final in only his second game on the senior level.

Sixteen-year-old Tucker will be called on to provide leadership for the West from his midfield position where he will likely be accompanied by Warwick Academy's Keion Simmons and Jahma Charles of Warwick Secondary.

Coach Tankard echoed Beard's sentiments of stressing team play and a willingness by each team member to give 110 percent effort.

"The ability to listen and the desire to work hard will have a definite bearing on the outcome,'' said Tankard, in his third year at the helm. "I feel pretty good about all areas and think the team is well balanced.

Neither coach would offer any concrete predictions with Tankard only saying that "it will be a good game and the West will give a good account of themselves''.

The preceeding Primary Schools game promises to produce a first as Danielle Paynter of West End School is set to become the first female to take part in an All-Star match.

Paynter will suit up for the West as they attempt to wrest the title from the East, 3-2 victors a year ago.

Jay Tucker coaches the West and will match wits with the East's man in charge Wendell Smith.
