Equestrian trio head for Antigua

in the third round of the Caribbean Equestrian Association Junior Show Jumping competition in Antigua.

Lindsay Sousa, 15, and Daniella DeSilva, 13, will be riding in the main competition for under-17s. They will be using borrowed horses which are loaned by the host country and ridden by all competitors on a round robin basis.

The third local rider, Jana Outerbridge, 12, will be participating in the pony division which is designed to expose equestrians to overseas competition on different ponies.

Other countries taking part are Jamaica, Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago.

Bermuda hosted the first round in January and received a bye for the second round in Barbados.

The fourth round will be in Trinidad and Tobago in May with the final round scheduled for Jamaica in November.

Accompanying the trio to Antigua will be team coach and chaperone Catrina Adcock, an instructor at the Spicelands Riding Centre.

However, the trip south means that both Adock and Sousa will miss the FEI World Jumping Challenge which is taking place in Bermuda this weekend at the National Equestrian Centre.

That event is a four-round jumping competition over two days starting on Saturday at 9.00 a.m. and involving other countries, who compete simultaneously on their home venue.

Competitors are required to complete four rounds on courses which are the same for all countries and designed by an FEI course designer.

Most of Bermuda's top riders will be competing, including last year's winner Ann Lindroth and junior riders Ki Minors and Philip Correia.

The local results are forwarded to the FEI for tabulation and comparison with 16 other countries in Bermuda's group which includes Panama, Costa Rica, Hong Kong and Kenya.

Last year Bermuda ended up fourth out of the 17 countries.
