Familiar faces return for Fritz's Pro-Am
more than last year -- fly in this weekend for local restaurateur Fritz Reiter's annual golf extravaganza.
The Lobster Pot Invitational Pro-Am, now in its 22nd year, takes place at Castle Harbour throughout next week with many of the same names that have contributed to its success in the past.
Reigning Belmont Invitational champion Paul Parajeckas makes his first return since victory at the Warwick course last December, bringing with him a team from the Woburn Country Club in Massachusetts, who were net runners-up last year.
Defending net champions Meadow Brook Golf Club from Reading, Massachusetts, with long-time visitor Ed Whalley at the helm, are also back as are last year's third-placed Towson Golf and Country Club, captained by pro Mike Norton.
Another familiar name is that of Tom Smack, the former Castle Harbour golf director who now plays out of the Sagamore club in New York. He returns aiming to successfully defend his Lobster Pot pro title in next Thursday's 18-hole pro championship while his team from Sagamore will be defending the Pro-Am gross title.
Next week's programme encompasses four separate events with teams vying for the Pro-Am title over 54 holes on Monday, Tuesday and Friday, and the amateurs and professionals competing in separate 18-hole championships on Thursday.
Wednesday has been set aside for Reiter's sixth annual Charity Pro-Am which sees invited local amateurs partner the overseas pros in teams of five.
"We have so many people wanting to play that we've decided to send the teams out in fivesomes this year,'' said Reiter.
Last year's pro event saw Smack fire a three-under 68 to win by one shot over five players. And four of those will again be challenging with Parajeckas joined by Steve Napoli, John Fields and Bob Cornett.
Perennial visitor Joe Car, who returns with his Bedrock team, will also be among the field, as will Mickey Herron, who has been a contender in previous years.
