Foggo mesmerises Somerset's Colts
The two players St. George's were banking on most, Lionel Cann and captain Greg Foggo, both produced the goods as the east-enders defended their Colts Cup Match title on Saturday with a 65 run win at Somerset Cricket Club.
Cann led the St. George's batting with 64 before Foggo snatched eight for 17 from 12.4 overs of left-arm medium-pace as Somerset struggled to reach the winning target.
Somerset had St. George's in some early trouble when Michael Kelly was dismissed with just five runs on the board and Ross Dowling was dismissed 21 runs later to make it 26 for two.
This brought Cann to the wicket to join opener Ryan Steede and they added 68 for the third wicket with Steede scoring 11 before he fell to captain Rahji Edness. After Cann was fourth out, hitting four sixes and seven fours, Foggo took up the responsibility with 22.
Brent Minors, with 12, was the only other batsman in double figures as Dwight Basden claimed five for 20 from 10 overs with five maidens and opener Steval Arorash supported with three for 27 from 11.5 overs.
Foggo had the Somerset batsmen in all sorts of trouble from the southern end as he took the first five wickets to have them reeling at 16 for five with the majority of their key batsmen now back in the pavilion.
Edness played a true captain's innings as he hit 42 from five fours and a six in a stand of 54 with Cordell Gilbert, which silenced the large St. George's following and gave his team a faint hope of victory.
However, Somerset's resistance vanished the moment spinner Kuma Smith ended that stand by bowling Edness in his first over. After that it was all downhill as Foggo, now back at the eastern end, grabbed three more wickets in his second spell to wrap up the victory.
Foggo had six maidens in his spell and of his wickets four were bowled, three were lbw and one was caught behind by wicket-keeper Jason Anderson. No other Somerset batsman reached double figures.
