Four of the Island's top high school basketball teams -- and five of the top players -- meet in the first tournament of the year tomorrow.
The sixth annual Bank of Butterfield/Saltus tournament for senior boys features Whitney, Saltus, Berkeley and Mount Saint Agnes.
The teams meet in round-robin competition, with each game consisting of two eight-minute halves monitored by a running clock. Players are only allowed three personal fouls. The tournament starts at 9.30 a.m. and the championship game should finish around 12.30.
Whitney, the defending Bermuda champions, Berkeley and MSA have each started the season with three wins. Saltus are 1-2 but, according to Whitney coach Freddie Evans, "they're capable of much better.
"In fact, if you had asked me at the beginning of the season, I would've said that they were number one.'' Saltus are led by forward Joshua Nesbitt. "Everyone else has to catch up with him and that team will start clicking,'' said Evans.
Kevin Mooney, a 6-foot-3 guard, leads MSA, while John Barry Nusum, perhaps the best all-around player in the league, guides unbeaten Berkeley.
Whitney are led by Javin Taylor and Lloyd Peterkin, averaging 16 and 18 points per game, respectively.
BOWLING BOW The Miller High Life League again proved just why it is regarded as the premier league on the Island with all of the stars shining brightly in latest action.
The long awaited clash featuring defending champions, Tools and Equipment, and current leaders, Marlboro, didn't disappoint.
In the end the score-line heavily favoured Equipment -- 21-9 -- but it was no easy victory.
Leading keglers Dean Lightbourn and Antoine Jones showed they were in top form ahead of the upcoming Bermuda Southern Regional tournament, with Lightbourn bowling the night's second high series (627) and third high game (221). Jones, meanwhile, scored a 610 series that included the second high game of 225.
After being battered during the first two games, Marlboro finally came alive in the third, winning it behind the efforts of Doug Hines' top game of 254.
Hines also had the best overall series of 653.
Added all up Equipment managed the top game (1,066) and series (2,942), while Marlboro had to settle for second with a 974 game and 2,869 series.
In other action, Lite Ice paced themselves to a 18-12 win over Team Metro, with Mike Lambe rolling a 602 series for the winners.
