Goals galore as minnows Mariners crush Prospect
Mariners made a mockery of Prospect's Second Division status with this crushing FA Cup first round win at Police Field yesterday.
The margin of victory was no less than the Commercial Division A side deserved as they outplayed their hosts in every facet of the game. But they had to come from behind after Lawrence Smith put Prospect ahead in the 34th minute with a well-taken goal.
Mariners responded almost immediately through top marksman Richard Correia who showed great composure in beating wayward 'keeper Ian Tomkins and scoring after a deflected header came his way.
Mariners 'keeper Dennis Rodrigues was their first-half hero as he made a number of key saves after his defence had been caught napping.
The second half reflected more of Mariners' superiority and they went ahead in the 58th minute after an excellent combination between Correia and Craig Dixon was completed with the latter smashing home a fine left-footer on the swivel.
Prospect were deflated by this goal and consequently the quality of the match also slipped.
Mariners were to show no mercy, however, and John Frias crashed home the third in the 64th minute, well picked out by Dixon. It was 4-1 three minutes later when Dixon scored his second after taking a pass from Correia.
Holder scored the first of his two goals against the run of play in the 72nd minute but there would be more trouble at the other end as, in the 79th, Correia beat Antoine Daniels before rounding the 'keeper to score.
Correia completed his hat-trick in the 82nd minute, this time taking a pass from Dixon before Holder's header in the 87th gave Prospect their third goal.
But the last say went to Mariners, Joe Barbosa scoring with a left-foot drive from 20 yards two minutes into stoppage time.
Fire Service 3 Ham.Parish 2 Two goals in three minutes early in the second half propelled Commercial Division outfit Fire Service past Hamilton Parish at Police Field.
Andrew Griffith netted with a well struck right-foot shot from 15 yards in the 51st minute, then Roger Dill spotted Parish's Trent Simmons well off his line in the 54th and scored with a 35-yarder that the lanky 'keeper could only get a fingertip to.
This proved the defining moment of a see-saw affair which saw the underdogs play the better soccer most of the way.
Still, they only led 1-0 on a 19th minute goal from Brandon Outerbridge who chipped the 'keeper from the right side of the box.
Parish fought back in the latter stages of the half and had a goal disallowed in their first real positive move, Chris Caisey penalised for handball.
Leroy Robinson headed their best chance over the bar in the 39th minute, but Parish had seized the momentum and kept it in the early stages of the second half as Antwon Darrell scored after only 45 seconds. Parish gave themselves a chance when Darrell notched their second in the 65th minute after a neat exchange with Peter Madeiros but that was all they could muster.
Som.Eagles 2 Robin Hood 2 (after extra-time) Giant killers Robin Hood earned a replay at White Hill when they battled back from 0-2 down in the second half.
And only the crossbar stood between the Commercial Division team and victory as twice in the first period of extra-time they put efforts against the woodwork through a Tim Perry header and a Jarlath McCabe free kick.
Eagles took a deserved lead in the 11th minute when Shannon Morrissey scored after running the ball around the advancing Graeme Pitkethly before scoring from a sharp angle.
Rodre Wilson of Eagles was shown the red card in the 26th minute for foul language. And though that did not prevent Eagles from doubling their lead in the 51st minute when substitute Dion Minors scored from close range, Hood realised they still had a chance.
The introduction of Eagles player-coach Kenny Thompson did not deter Hood, who reached the semi-finals of the cup in 1991 when they lost to PHC.
Hood scored their first goal in the 59th minute through Alex McLaughlin, one of three starters who played in the '91 semi-final. Missed chances by Eagles spurred the visitors on even more and in the 71st minute they drew level when full back Mike Harvey's shot from deep on the left caught Ricky Tucker off his line and he only succeeded in pushing the ball under the crossbar in his attempt to get it over the top.
Paget 10 Exiles 0 There were plenty of goals to go around for Paget as they annihilated Exiles 10-0 at PHC Stadium yesterday.
Exiles, of the Commercial Division B, were made to pay for fielding only 10 men against the Second Division outfit.
Nine different players scored for the Ord Road club, who surprisingly led by just a 2-0 advantage at the half.
Terrence Christopher opened the scoring in the seventh minute, dribbling through a flat-footed Exiles' defence and slipping goalkeeper Lyndon Raynor.
Former Bermuda international striker Kenny Burt doubled the lead four minutes later, heading home from close range following a left wing cross and the rout appeared on.
However, to Exiles credit, they were able to hold Paget for the remainder of the period and, in fact, should have pulled a goal back but had player/coach Quinton Jones waste his chance from two yards out.
Prison Officers hit for six From Page 21 A quite different story unfolded following the interval as the floodgates opened with Exiles' defence non-existent and Raynor forced to field a barrage of shots.
Goals came at regular intervals with Aaron Anderson (52nd minute), Daivon Steede (58th and 63rd), Robert Lee (62nd), Troy Burgess (68th), Alvin Baker (80th), Wayne Tucker (85th) and Chris Wright (89th) all finding the target.
YMSC 6 Prison Officers 2 Young Men's Social Club received a scare from an unlikely source, but in the end were able to advance to the second round of the FA Cup.
Leading 2-0 with but 12 minutes gone the Bluebirds inexplicably lapsed into cruise mode and Prison Officers took full advantage to draw even by the interval.
It took only a minute for William Benjamin to put Social Club ahead and it was Benjamin who again popped up in the 12th minute to double the lead.
However Prison Officers stormed back, unsettling their younger foes with a purposeful short passing game and were rewarded with strikes five minutes apart by midfielder Mike Lambe (30th) and forward Denton Leader (35th).
The second half unfurled with Officers continuing to match Social Club step for step, but ultimately fitness told the tale with the former simply running out of steam.
A fine overlapping move by left-back Shannon Burchall produced the goal of the match, Burchall rifling a 20-yard effort into the right corner to give Social Club a 3-2 lead in the 54th minute.
Another defender, substitute centre-back Treadwell Walker, likewise reaped dividends after a purposeful forward run, nodding in a header at the far post after 68 minutes.
It was then left to evergreen veteran Coolridge Bell to round out the scoring with goals in the 76th and 81st minutes.
Lobster Pot 4 Belco 1 Lobster Pot made certain of victory with three goals in a 15 minute period early in the second half at White Hill Field.
They led 1-0 at the half on a goal by Anthony Smith after 16 minutes. Pot wasted some good opportunities to stretch the lead before the break, with Tim Brown heading against the crossbar and Chris Eaton putting a free header wide.
Anthony Whaley made it 2-0 two minutes into the second half when he kept his composure to slot the ball past Josh Binns in the Belco goal.
Less than a minute later Lobster Pot added a third for good measure when Simon Van de Weg scored from an angle inside the box.
Veteran Rob Eastham, on just a few minutes, got in on the scoring act in the 62nd minute when he also got behind the Belco defence and tucked a low shot inside the far post.
Belco pulled a goal back in the 69th minute when a high ball into the penalty area by full back Shawn Spencer went through the outstretched hands of goalkeeper Keith Hodgkins. Eastham was denied a second goal by the post in the 75th minute.
St.G.All-Stars 1 Forties 1 (after extra-time) A penalty miss by Cal Rayner proved costly for St. George's All-Stars as Forties battled back to earn a replay at Wellington Oval.
Rayner wasted his spot kick in the opening minutes of the match and the game remained scoreless until the first period of extra-time when Dale Thompson shot the home team into the lead.
Andy Robinson earned a replay for Forties when he scored from the penalty spot in the second period.
BAA 4 Spinning Wheel 3 A late substitution helped spoil a late comeback in a see-saw battle of lesser lights at BAA Field.
Donovan Thompson, who came on in the 65th minute, scored from a corner three minutes into extra-time to lift his Second Divison club over Commercial League Spinning Wheel.
Leading 2-1 at the half, BAA watched Wheel level the game just 20 seconds into the second half when Des Minors and Keith Bell broke free with Minors finally pushing a shot past goalkeeper Gerald Sims.
With just ten minutes left, BAA went ahead when Steve Gair, who opened the scoring in the 24th minute, slammed a knee-high corner into the net.
But Wheel weren't through. Moments after Bell thought he scored with a shot off the bar, Minors completed his hat-trick, nodding in a cross from Duvall Minors with just two minutes to play.
In extra-time Thompson's deflection hit the bar and bounced into the bottom corner.
Dill had made it 2-0 in the 27th minute before Des Minors scored his first in the 37th minute.
The inclement weather cleared up sufficiently to allow eight of the 11 FA Cup matches to go ahead.
Bermuda Football Association will announce the replay schedule today for the FA Cup matches and the Martonmere Cup semi-final between Vasco and North Village which was postponed on Saturday night.
The matches are expected to be scheduled for tomorrow.
