Golfers come to seniors' aid
Course this month.
But this time they will not just be aiming to lower their scores -- they will be teeing off for Bermuda's senior citizens.
A newly-formed group of golfers, The Chari-tees Committee, have organised the benefit tournament which takes place on February 21.
Well-known golfer Mr. Randolph (Shorty) Spencer, who heads the interim committee, said after winning the Colonial Insurance Admiralty House Shield in 1991, a group of golfers decided to put on another tournament to raise money for the elderly.
Mr. Spencer said they believed they could have fun while providing for a cause which could, if they live long enough, benefit them one day.
The group hopes to raise $2,500 to $3,000 which will go to Admiralty House' seniors' programme for things such as van repairs.
Director of the senior citizens Admiralty House programme, Mr. Fred Hassell said he was grateful for events which helped the community remain aware of the aged.
He said a partnership between seniors and sports clubs could also allow people to make a smoother transition into senior citizen status.
Mr. Spencer stressed that the make-up of The Chari-tees committee was temporary. A formal committee will be elected after the fund raising event.
And he encourage all golfers to get involved.
