Hammond takes top prize at tournament
Michaels Ladies Invitational golf tournament, carried off top prize in the senior gross division when the 54-hole event came to a close on Friday at the Carambola course in St. Croix, Virgin Islands.
Mid Ocean Club member Hammond also helped Bermuda finish runners-up in the overall gross division as the Island's 10-strong team carded a three-day total of 797, 14 shots behind winners South East Florida.
Net winners in the 12-team tournament were hosts St. Croix (629) by a massive 30 shots from runners-up Jamaica (659).
Bermuda had been lying in second place in both divisions at the end of Thursday's second round as Hammond (72), Susan Holland (72) and Dorothy Burchall (75) returned the team's best net scores and Holland (84), Hammond (88) and Judy Kitson carded the best gross.
Friday's final round, over a tough course and in unusually hot conditions, saw Bermuda clinch the gross runners-up spot with scores of 85 from Holland, 89 from Kitson and 93 from Glenda Todd, playing in her 19th Kitty Michaels tournament.
Holland (73), Burchall (75) and Kitson (76) returned the best net scores as Bermuda slipped out of second place.
Bermuda had won the net trophy back in 1985 when the tournament was last played in St. Croix.
