The only Bermuda foursome among the seven teams entered sits in second spot, after Belmont pro Judith Astwood, Linda Fenton, Gilda Furbert and Synda Cook registered a net score of 68.

They trail Terri Magliaccio, Winnie Jahn, Marge Voith and Sue Zupko, who carded a net 67, but lead two other teams by two strokes. Nearly all of the competitors bring handicaps into the event. Teams skippered by Joy Bonhurst and Mary Thomas tied for the first day gross lead with scores of 77, four up on Astwood's group.

Conditions were "terrible,'' tournament organiser Frank Rabain said. "Some of (the golfers) couldn't even stand up,'' he joked. Second round goes today and the third round on Saturday.

Bermuda's Tom Stearns and partner Alan Leyland maintained their lead after yesterday's third round of the Founders Trophy at Mid Ocean Club.

The pair combined for a net score of 70 in blustery conditions and will take a five-shot lead over Edward Marshall/Ernest Rizzi and Terry West/Neil Lumsden, each with a three-day total of 199, into today's final round.

Kirk Kitson and Tony Lee are another four shots behind at 203.

In the gross division, Paul Evans and Michael Dunkley jumped from second to first after a ten-shot swing with Wednesday's leaders, Blake Marshall and Jeff Eidson. Evans and Dunkley scored a 73 for a total of 218. Marshall and Eidson slumped to 223, a shot up on Dan Siegel and Steve Duxbury.
