Hill strike settles Premier clash

East 0 West 1 A 43rd minute strike by Clevon Hill settled the Premier All-Star clash in favour of West.

Hill, who plays regularly for Wolves, was allowed to run free onto a ball up the middle after East midfielder Keith Jennings lost possession and the forward made his opponents pay, calmly slipping the ball past goalkeeper Nigel Burgess.

While West had the edge during the first half, the second favoured East, the only item missing being goals.

Sound work by the defence and midfield was constantly thwarted by poor finishing from East's forwards, with Otis Minors failing to convert straight forward chances on at least two occasions.

They were also hindered by some stout defending, with Lanerio Simmons standing tall at the back for West, for which he was named the game's MVP.

WOMEN'S ALL-STARS East 1 West 0 Teenage prodigy Renika Bean starred in this affair, which was dominated by East from start to finish.

Bean, named the game's MVP, notched the lone goal 22 minutes into the second half to decide an encounter that showed women to be fully capable of performing -- and doing so well -- in what is commonly regarded as a male domain.

With Chevonne Furbert, Bean and Naquita Dill up front for East, the task was always a tough one for West, who owed much of the low margin of defeat to the efforts of sweeper Shawnette Smith. Time and again Smith was able to cut out threats by the trio, her pace and solid tackling proving a godsend.

Furbert unloaded a cracking volley in the eighth minute that crashed against the crossbar, bringing the crowd to its feet, while Bean and Dill were wide with efforts in the 15th and 31st minutes as West found themselves pinned in their own half for much of the opening half.

West came more into their own after the break, but were rocked by Bean.

The multi-talented athlete -- Bean holds the secondary schools' high jump record among her age group -- latched onto a long ball up the middle and outpaced centre-back Waynesha Bean before slotting into the low, left corner.
