Championships will be held overseas -- and Bermuda has claimed the privilege.

The Island was awarded the venue for this year's tournament after the Police Men's team placed third last year in Philadelphia.

Now in their second participating year, spokesman Calvin Smith said the Police Men's team was ready to give the defending champions from Vancouver a warm -- and formidable -- welcome.

"We should win it this year,'' said Det. Con. Smith. "We have the home field advantage.'' Last year the team recorded four draws, one loss, and one win in Philadelphia.

Vancouver will also be challenged by law enforcement representatives from the US Secret Service and the New York, Toronto Metro, Los Angeles, York Regional, Fort Lauderdale, Montgomery County, Philadelphia, and Seattle Police Departments.

The eleven men's and women's teams will go up against five local teams from the Bermuda Police, Reserves and Prisons.

Some 173 players and their family members are expected for the week long activities which begin on Tuesday. Festivities throughout the tournament will include a moonlight cruise, barbecue, and fun day.

The competition uses soccer to foster comradeship among law enforcement officers, promote local communities, and encourage drug free sports and youth fellowship. All of the soccer games will have free admission.
