Hubbard helps launch cycle clinic
Junior Cycle Clinic at Warwick Academy where teachers George Sutherland and Disa Manders were instrumental in getting the programme started.
Dave Carlsen and his fiancee, Sue Scully, are running the four-day clinic which began on Tuesday and winds up today. The event, aimed at teaching youngsters bike safety, is backed by local law firm Conyers, Dill and Pearman, sponsors of the Island's top cyclist, Hubbard, who is currently based in Europe.
"This is really the shot in the arm that local cycling has always needed and I know we can find some hidden talent if we only look hard enough,'' said Hubbard recently.
"These youngsters are at an age where just a little guidance, direction and motivation can make all the difference in the world. "I'm very happy to have a role in this programme and I feel confident about Bermuda's cycling future for the first time in years. The talent is there, we just need to find it and then direct it.'' A total of 23 primary schools were invited to send students to the clinic which has the support of Bermuda Bicycle Association.
Some of the areas covered in the clinic include equipment, safety, traffic rules, cycling skills and techniques and nutrition.
Carlsen is an experienced cyclist and has his own cycling business in New Hampshire. He organises similar camps/clinics on the East Coast, while Scully is a teacher and also a keen cyclist.
