Island's teen stars serve up a treat
Bermuda 5 Cayman Islands 0 The Cayman Islands were made to look like bumbling circus clowns as Bermuda's youngsters displayed all the flair of trapeze artists to advance through to the next round of the Under-15 Caribbean Championships last night.
Some of the football produced by Kenny Thompson's charges brought gasps of the type more regularly heard in the Big Top from a sizeable crowd at a chilly National Stadium -- and it was all too much for the Caymans as they slumped out 7-2 on aggregate.
And they could not have complained had the margin of defeat been much greater as Bermuda erected their own marquee in the Caymans half, even when a strong wind was against them in the opening 45 minutes.
"Sometimes the performance reached spectacular levels for boys so young,'' said a delighted Thompson afterwards. "They have a lot to be proud of.'' The home side had already missed four acceptable chances before they took the lead in the 28th minute. Striker Damon Swan had gone close with a ninth minute header, the culmination of a flowing move in which Domico Coddington had more than a walk-on role.
This time, though, he had to do most of the work on his own, twisting and turning to make room for his shot after the visitors had failed to clear a corner, then whipping in an unstoppable effort from 15 yards.
The goal settled any doubts that their superior football would bring its reward and moments later a flash of skill by Jason Davis -- a clever drag-back which took two opponents out of the picture -- followed by a darting run by Coddington, had spectators on their feet.
But if they thought that was good, they hadn't seen anything until Dion Stovell started selecting from his repertoire of tricks.
First, he beat three players in a run across the edge of the penalty box which was finally stopped by a wall of defenders; then he got serious, bringing down a high ball in one movement, skipping round three more defenders and firing home for the 38th minute second.
Coddington joined in the fun and fizzed past three more Cayman players on the byline before dragging his shot wide.
The visitors had been reduced to long balls over the top which the impressive Chris Moulder and Jason Dill in central defence had dealt with well.
And as Bermuda's romp continued, the Caymans were forced to move the 6ft 3ins 15-year-old Ariel Tatum from midfield to striker and finally into a sweeping role where he could more adequately protect the overworked George Ramoon in goal.
However, even Ramoon's acrobatics were not enough to prevent Jason Dill curling in an excellent third from a 56th minute free kick on the right edge of the box. By contrast, Moulder's fourth, six minutes later, was a regulation effort, as he headed Stovell's corner home.
Swan hit the bar and Jonathan Ball surprised Ramoon with a long range strike as Bermuda's players lined up in an effort to get on the scoresheet.
But Swan it was who got the fifth, running on to a long ball and lobbing Ramoon with aplomb.
