Jamaica's leader saves day for Bermudian cricket fans
Bermudian cricket fans left stranded in Jamaica after a Test Match was cancelled on the first day have had their holiday saved -- thanks to the intervention of Jamaica's Prime Minister.
Dozens of Bermudians flew out to Jamaica last week to watch England take on the West Indies in Kingston. But the match -- scheduled to last five days -- was abandoned within an hour last Thursday because the pitch was unplayable.
But after overseas visitors complained that their trip had been a waste of money Prime Minister P.J. Patterson stepped in to provide some consolation excursions -- including a luncheon party in the gardens of the Premier's official residence.
And to keep the guests satisfied a special all expenses paid day-trip to a top resort was also laid on. A spokeswoman for the Jamaican Tourist Board said: "We wish to convey to all visitors who came to Jamaica to attend the cricket Test Match between England and the West Indies our deep regret and disappointment at the cancellation of the match.
"As a small gesture the Prime Minister will be hosting a party on the lawns of Jamaica House for all guests who are on the Island for this event.'' The spokeswoman added guests had been invited to visit the north coast over the weekend, spending a "fun-filled day'' at a resort.
"The PM is very anxious for us to do all we can to minimise the disappointment created by the cancellation.'' All hotels in the area were contacted and asked to pass on arrangements for the two events to their overseas guests.
