Jennings strike proves just enough

Kevin Jennings was the toast of North Village last night after his second half goal sealed victory for his side in this FA Cup third round match at PHC Stadium. But they could have just as easily wanted his head.

Jennings had a previous chance to seal victory when the ball fell to his feet in front of a beckoning Dandy Town goalmouth, but the lanky striker fluffed the shot with the score tied at 1-1.

Damon Wade netted the opening goal for the Red Devils in the 33rd minute only to be followed a minute later by Dandy Town's equaliser -- a Devarr Boyles slam from close range.

But the Hornets could have walked away with a clear win if they had capitalised on their early chances when it seemed as if they were the only team on the park capable of attacking.

It was all Town as Boyles and Reginald Tucker launched attack after attack, keeping Village defenders Irving Romaine, Kevin Grant and Michael Hansey on their back foot.

Romaine, however, managed to disrupt the Hornets as he launched a counter attack, sending the ball to Jennings in front of Town's goal.

And with goalkeeper Cymande Davis beaten and the defence floundering, the Red Devils made the most of their first real chance as Jennings got off a weak pass to Wade who tucked the ball away with his left foot.

Dandy Town fired back immediately, earning a corner kick after Village keeper Dwayne Adams had let the ball deflect off his head.

Carlos Smith launched a high floating cross, putting Adams under pressure as his defence failed to clear. Adams managed to save two fierce close range shots before Boyles finally put the ball away.

After the interval, Town came out with Scott Morton on the field but the team seemed to lose their rhythm.

Village, meanwhile, stepped up the pace and attacked furiously. Jennings found himself directly in front of goal on the receiving end of a wonderful cross from Wade. The defence failed to clear and all Jennings had to do was tuck the ball in the net, but a weak spinning kick gave Davis time to recover and make the save.

But by now the Hornets' defence was in a shambles and a long Grant kick deep into Town's goal area saw Jennings emerge from a cluster of defenders to slip the ball past Davis for the winner.

Town's desperate search for an equaliser almost ended in success with a Darron Simons' drive from outside the box but the ball rebounded off the post while a Tucker effort was later snuffed out by Adams.
