Late flurry carries Trojans to convincing Shield win
Somerset 4 Prospect 1 "We're baaaack!'' In what was an early warning to First Division clubs, Somerset captain Anthony Burchall made the regaling announcement yesterday following his team's trampling of Prospect in the Second Division Shield final.
However, while the scoreline suggested an all out rout by the West Enders, the reality for at least 70 minutes was a closely contested affair before the gate was blown wide open by a late flurry.
"This was the worst game of football we've played all year. We played horrible until the last 20 minutes,'' Somerset coach Randy Horton would acknowledge afterwards. But he added: "When you can play as badly as that and win it's the sign of a champion.'' Heavily favoured from the outset, Somerset started positively with the benefit of a strong tailwind, striker Everett Wellman seeping through the Prospect defence in the third minute and shooting just wide of the left upright and moments later again finding room but this time having his effort stopped by goalkeeper Antoine Daniels.
There was little Daniels could do to keep veteran Stevie Riley from putting the Trojans ahead in the 13th minute with a rasping drive that seared into the left side.
Michael Brangman created the chance, racing into the area and beating Daniels with a low, angled shot that rebounded off the upright directly into the path of Riley who made no mistake.
Stung by the early blow, Prospect responded with some attacking forays of their own. Ty-Ron Douglas glanced a header inches wide following a left wing corner in the 17th minute and then Laurence Holder wasted another prime opportunity two minutes later when he eluded the offside trap but directed the ball straight at 'keeper Keenan Tucker.
Holder made no mistake when presented another crack in the 21st minute, collecting a loose ball on the left side and cutting in before slotting the ball just beyond the fingertips of a diving Tucker into the right corner.
The best goal of the match came four minutes following the restart. Musceo Hunt supplied the fireworks in launching a rising 20-yard thunderbolt that left Daniels and the rest of the defence as spectators as it whisked by.
Still, Prospect remained in the game, but their hopes evaporated in the 78th minute when substitute Lamaul Crofton notched goal number three, latching onto a Brangman pass and beating Daniels at the second attempt.
Brangman himself applied the finishing touch three minutes from the end, calmly tapping in a right-wing cross from close range.
"I certainly think that it was an end that we expected,'' said Horton, who also guided Somerset to promotion in his first season back as coach. "This (winning Shield) was one of our goals...'' Dev. Colts All-Stars 0 BAA Wanderers 2 BAA Wanderers' season of plenty got even better as they ended the fairytale ride for Devonshire Colts All-Stars, using a workmanlike performance to seize the Commercial Division KO Cup.
Goals on either side of the interval by busy forward Mick O'Connell served as the difference between the two sides, as the recently crowned league champions added another piece of silverware to their collection.
In the end the superior fitness of Wanderers won out, but there was no shame on the side of All-Stars who fought to the bitter end regardless.
O'Connell popped up to give his team the lead after just nine minutes as a right side attack saw the ball perfectly crossed into the penalty area, leaving the player with the simple task of slotting home from close range past goalkeeper Stephen Simmons.
Then, as the match appeared set for a 1-0 finish, O'Connell was brought down from behind by full back Paul Frias while racing at goal, leaving referee Robert Fox no alternative but to point to the spot. O'Connell rose to plant his kick inside the left corner.
