SAIL COURSE A SUCCESS SLG Sail course a success Three instructors worked with nearly 40 youth skippers as Bermuda's junior sailing programme broke new ground recently.

Three different fleets spent most of the Easter week being drilled by their coaches and hammered by winds of 20 knots or more on all but the last day.

Leading the Advanced Optimist fleet of about 20 Bermudian and US sailors was US National Optimist team coach Amy Gross, who was assisted by Bermuda's Carola Cooper.

Jim Koehler, a veteran Sunfish sailor from Long Island, honed the boat handling skills of the Intermediate Optimist fleet, while Brett Davis, champion-class US Laser sailor worked alongside the Island's own Olympic hopeful Christian Luthi refining the abilities of the Laser Radial skippers.

The week ended with a combined regatta in the Great Sound, with Renee Black winning the Intermediate Optimists, Jesse Kirkland triumphing in the Advanced Optimists and Zander Kirkland heading the Laser Radials.

The Americans, under head coach Martin McGrogan, whose players are aged between 18 and 21, have already drawn 1-1 with a Dandy Town XI at St. John's Field and have beaten Bermuda College 3-2.

McGrogan is a close friend of Bermuda's national coach Clyde Best.
