Looby gets the bronze
Countries World Cycling Championships in Cuba it was confirmed last night.
Initial reports suggested he had finished third in the event, but there was some confusion as he had not been planning to race in it when the six-man Bermuda national team left for Havana shortly after Looby won the Heritage Day Road Race two weeks ago.
But national team coach Greg Hopkins, who is not travelling with the team, said yesterday he assumed that Looby decided to ride the 4,000 after failing to medal in the kilometre time trial -- an event he took bronze in two years ago.
Hopkins said: "The main priority at the Chammpionships for the team is the road race. However, MacInnis took the opportunity to ride on the track in 1996 and won a bronze medal in the Kilometre. He hoped to repeat that this year and, knowing him, he would have been disappointed not to do that and that is probably why he rode the pursuit.
"There is little or no chance for our riders to ride on the track which is a pity because I think it is a discipline that a lot of riders in Bermuda could excel at. We are very happy that MacInnis rode so well.'' Looby was joining the rest of the team of Jeff Payne, Steve Sterritt, Mike Lee and Kevin Topple in the weekend's road race but results were last night unavailable because of communication problems between Bermuda and Cuba.
