Lopes leads the way in New York

yesterday's New York Marathon -- the only local among a group of more than 20 to break the three hour barrier.

Thirty nine year-old Lopes clocked two hours, 57 minutes and 35 seconds, well outside his personal best for the 26.2 mile distance, but good enough for 674th overall in a massive field of close to 30,000.

Next best among the Bermuda contingent was another 39-year-old, Cal Steede, who only a week earlier completed the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington.

Steede clocked three hours, six minutes and 32 seconds yesterday compared to his 3:02:53 in Washington. He was followed by Vernon Tankard, 41, who finished in 3:12.14. Steede placed 1,124th and Tankard 1,632nd.

Joseph Froncioni clocked 3:29:24, Jeremy Peele 3:31:15 and 33-year-old Rosemary Jones was believed to be the first Island female to finish in 3:34:28 to place 406th in the women's field.
