MacKenzie regains title
Amateur Golf Championships yesterday, seizing his fourth title in five years.
The United States resident shot a final round five-over-par 75 to win by three strokes ahead of local Howard DeSilva. MacKenzie finished with a three round score of 217, compared to 220 for DeSilva, who registered an even-par closing round.
From the outset the tournament rapidly unfurled as MacKenzie's to win or lose, after the American took an early six-stroke advantage based on a first round 70. And yesterday saw the 1997, 1998, 1999 and now 2001 champ do just enough to ensure he once again found his way to the winner's circle.
DeSilva did well to bounce back from an opening day 77, his next two rounds progressively better. Placing third on 222 was Michael Tavares, who had the week's best round of 69 on Wednesday.
Low net winner was Roger Harvey via retrogression over Lionel Turner, both registering adjusted scores of 208.
On the women's side, Dolly Winwick triumphed by four strokes over two rounds, scoring a total of 172, to hold off Elaine Stevens (176) and Joan Foulger (176).
Low net winner was Lee Kerr at 146, with Judi Gibbons next on 148.
Champion once more: American Clarke MacKenzie captured his fourth Bermuda Seniors Championship in five years at Riddell's Bay yesterday, having led from start to finish.
Winning form: Dolly Winwick eyes a shot on her way to victory in the Bermuda Women's Senior Championship yesterday.
