Mallory, DeSilva cruise to victory

men's and women's singles titles at Pomander Gate over the weekend, both with convincing if not entertaining victories.

In a lacklustre display, DeSilva won the Ladies `A' crown against her Fed Cup team-mate, unseeded Tara Lambert, 6-2, 6-2.

Neither player exhibited much quality play in a match riddled with unforced errors and double faults, and only the occasional clean winner.

Lambert opened the match with a service break after DeSilva won the first point and then put the next four into the net. But the top seed immediately broke back.

Lambert never held serve throughout the match and it was only another service break in game seven of the first set and in games three and seven of the second which gave the score some degree of respectability in the 55-minute contest.

Mallory found an even quicker route to victory as he swept past Jensen Bascome 6-0, 6-2 in just 45 minutes.

The first set lasted only 18 minutes as Bascome failed to find his rhythm, and his attempts at his patented angled shots failed to clear the net.

While Bascome fought valiantly and hit some brilliant shots, Mallory's passing shots were played with precision.

Bascome held serve early in the second set, then broke Mallory when he used a triangle offence, moving Mallory around the court and then closing into the net to put away a fine volley to take a 2-1 lead.

But Mallory's depth and experience prevailed as he again took control to win the remaining games and the match.

The ladies doubles final saw an exciting match between the pair of Laverne Stowe and Tara Lambert and Kelly Holland and Jill Finnegan with the former emerging as 7-6, 6-3 winners.

And the men's doubles final was also an entertaining affair as Mallory and Bascome teamed up to defeat second seeds Mark Cordeiro and Greg Frigerio 7-5, 6-4.

In the mixed doubles finals on Friday night, Cordeiro and Finnegan defeated Stuart Smith and Laverne Stowe 1-6, 6-4, 6-3.

In the `B' singles finals, unseeded Quinton Burgess got the better of fourth seed Hamish McCallum 6-3, 6-4 to win the men's title while fourth seed Mary Giordano took 55 minutes to dispatch top seed Danielle Downey 6-2, 6-2 to win the ladies' crown.
