Manders made to eat his words

Jamaica 161-3 All of the pre-game boasts on TV by the Western Stars captain that his team could provide a legitimate challenge to the visiting Jamaicans came to nought as the tourists recorded their fourth straight runaway victory at White Hill Field yesterday.

While Arnold Manders "talked the talk'', it was the Jamaicans "doing the walk'' during a seven wicket dismantling of the newly-crowned Premier League champions.

Stars fell victim to a brutal batting display from young openers Wavell Hinds and Robert Samuels, who put on a century stand paving the way for an easy victory.

Chasing a total of 158, each scored half-centuries with Samuels in vintage one-day form.

Most of the 24-year-old's 53 runs came from left-arm spinner Hasan Durham's third over, one he would want to rapidly forget.

Durham appeared helpless as Samuels torched him for five consecutive sixes, each a carbon copy of the previous, a pull shot to the vicinity of square leg.

Samuels added four fours and was out going for yet another big strike, this time off guest player David Adams, as he skied a high catch to Andre Manders at long on.

Adams struck again with his next ball as he trapped Wayne Lewis (0) lbw with a ball that cut back sharply from off-stump, reducing the visitors to 108 for two.

Their spirits lifted somewhat, Stars attempted to apply further pressure, but were turned away as Hinds and new batsman Mario Ventura added 25 for the third wicket.

Hinds finally departed at 133 after top scoring with 65, he too a victim of Adams. His innings last 82 balls from which he stroked nine fours and a single six.

It was then left to Ventura and teenager Wayne Cuff to knock off the remaining runs needed, with Ventura ending unbeaten on 16 and Cuff tallying 17.

Adams returned figures of three for 35 from his allotted 10 overs. However the remainder of the attack -- aside from Arnold Manders -- perhaps weary after a hectic season, left much to be desired.

Earlier, Stars were stalled in their bid for a healthy total by stringent bowling from the Jamaicans.

Only Jeff Richardson was able to unleash his arsenal against a visiting attack that combined fast and slow bowling.

Openers Treadwell Gibbons (24) and Andre Manders (17) gave Stars a solid -- if slow -- beginning as they managed 40 for the first wicket before Manders was undone by the off spin of Marlon Gibbs.

Coming in at number three Albert Steede endured a brief stay at the crease, scoring just one, and Stars were placed in further difficulty when Ricky Brangman fell for four, leaving them precariously placed at 53 for three.

The introduction Richardson, though, brought new hope as he wasted little time dispatching balls to all parts of the ground while accelerating his team's total toward the century mark.

After seeing Gibbons and Arnold Manders (seven) both return to the pavilion, Richardson's instincts encouraged further attack, a move which accounted for his downfall when he was stumped by Andre Coley prodding forward.

The tail soon capitulated with only Durham (16) offering resistance.

Gibbs, Ventura and skipper Delroy Morgan each took three wickets, while Anthony Andrews accounted for the other.
