Manders' six-wicket haul takes Stars clear at the top
Warwick 90 Western Stars 92-1 Western Stars took sole possession of the Premier Division penthouse following a pair of wins over the weekend, including a nine wicket mauling of Warwick at St. John's Field yesterday.
Warwick were undone by the bowling of Stars skipper Arnold Manders who claimed six for 29 from 17.2 overs coming on as first change.
After an early disappointment that saw Treadwell Gibbons caught at short square leg for 14, with the score 15, Stars slowly but surely grafted their way to the winning total with Andre Manders showing signs of returning to form with an unbeaten knock of 44, while Gregory Sampson ended 26 not out.
Flatts 70 Bailey's Bay 71-0 Corey Hill and Jermaine Outerbridge combined to take nine wickets between them to spearhead champions Bailey's Bay to a ten-wicket victory over Flatts in Premier Division action at Sea Breeze Oval yesterday. Hill snatched six wickets for 28 off 13 overs with three maidens while Outerbridge hauled three for 40 off 12.1 overs as Flatts struggled to reach a decent score after falling to 30 for six. Bay reached victory in just 25 minutes, the duo needing just 32 balls. Ricky Hill was not out on 48 with three sixes and five fours while Cal Dill finished with 23 not out including four fours.
St. George's 177 St. David's 142 David Adams took seven for 39 and Eugene Foggo had two for 40 as St. George's defeated St. David's by 35 runs at Wellington Oval. The home team, who batted with just 10 after a player failed to show up, were rocked by a terrible start that saw them lose their first three wickets for just 13 runs before stability came when Lewis Foggo (24) and skipper Graham Fox (18) joined forces. Gone were quality batsmen like openers Dexter Smith (0), Eugene Foggo (6) and Wendell Smith (0). Although clearly shaken by Dale Fox's pace -- he took seven wickets for 64 off 17 overs -- St. George's managed to get additional help from Clevie Wade (26), Ricky Hodsoll (21) and Adams (22) to eventually reach a respectable total. St. David's had a good start thanks to openers Eddie Lambe (31) and Rudy Smith (17), but at 84 for two they lost their third wicket and from there on it was all downhill. Skipper Lionel Cann contributed a brave 43 not out but he ran out of competent partners.
Somerset CC 73 PHC 77-1 Lyle Millett took six for 26 from 12 overs with four maidens and Kallan Johnston claimed three for 18 off six overs as PHC beat Somerset by nine wickets at White Hill Field to complete their most successful weekend in the Premier Division. Somerset struggled after losing their first two wickets in the first over from Millett. Shaun Roberts was top bat with 19 while Curtis Lee scored 18. Player-coach Allen Richardson carried PHC to victory with an unbeaten 38 while William Minors was not out on 28.
Willow Cuts 161 Police 164-3 Police completed an impressive seven-wicket win over Willow Cuts at Somerset despite not starting their innings until 4.30. Tyrone Smith blasted 67 not out and top three batsmen Dennis Archer, Donovan Livingston and Ferdinand Thorne all got in the 20s as the Willow Cuts bowlers struggled to keep Police in check. Earlier Rodney Fubler scored 32 not out late in the order to take Willow Cuts to 161 while Richard Basden chipped in with 31. Richard Austin and Dwayne Leverock each took three wickets for Police.
Social Club 166 Southampton 168-6 Useful contributions from their top five batsmen enabled Southampton Rangers to reach the challenging target set by visitors Social Club at Southampton Oval. Keith Wainwright stroked 46 to lead the way and was followed by David Stoneham (26) and Janeiro Tucker (25) and Quinton Burch (22 no) as Rangers built on the opening stand of 80 from Wainwright and Stoneham. David Saltus was the best Social Club bowler, taking three for 36 from 10.2 overs. Opener Thomas Brangman was high man for Social Club with 59 while Cecil Pitcher scored 30 and Webster Mills 23 in the middle order. Garry Williams claimed five for 34 off 21 overs to lead the Rangers bowling as the last four Social Club wickets fell for 15 runs in 15 minutes after the tea break.
Somerset Bridge 84 Devonshire 88-3 Lloyd Smith took five for 19 and opening batsman Donald Norford hit 56 not out as Devonshire Rec. made easy work of Somerset Bridge at home.
The visitors could only manage 84 in 33.3 overs with O'Neil Virgil high man with 15 and Anthony Smith scoring 14. Supporting Smith in the bowling was Winston Trott with three for 27. Devonshire reached their total in half the time -- 15.2 overs -- as Norford lost three partners before he and Anthony Amory scored the remaining 31 runs for the fourth wicket for the win.
Cleveland 202 Nationals 101-9 Nationals barely escaped with a share of the points from this match as a mesmerising spell of spin bowling by Johnny Richardson almost turned the tide in Cleveland's favour.
Richardson claimed five for 22 from 12 overs. However, it was his inability to claim a sixth that denied his side victory.
Cleveland paid the price for batting past five o'clock as they had little time to dismiss their opponents. The game's final over began with Richardson inducing Michael Campbell into hitting his wicket on the first ball. But David Geraghty (10 not out) and Norman Godwin (one not out) survived the next five to earn the draw.
Earlier Jermaine Postlethwaite and Corey Lowe propped up Cleveland's innings with knocks of 60 and 63 respectively.
Spinner Bruce Perinchief took four for 57, while Alan Corcoran and Cal Burgess returned figures of two for 40 and two for 32 respectively.
