Mixed final a marathon thriller

Tournament couldn't get any better, it did.

Gretchen Devlin and Bob Brown pulled themselves from the brink of defeat to take the Century Mixed Doubles title at the Coral Beach Tennis Club over the weekend when they beat Gill Butterfield and Dick Mount 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 in a marathon three-hour final.

Having lost the first set and trailing 4-1 in the second, all hope seemed lost, but the American pair dug deep to pull off a thrilling victory.

But all was not lost for Butterfield and Mount as each returned to take a title. In fact, Butterfield took two. She teamed with Joan Hassell of England to win the Women's Doubles Open, defeating Devlin and Dianne Fortunado 6-0, 6-0 and they then captured the Doubles 40s title with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 win over Mary Lenore Blair and Tally Spadone. Mount teamed with Wally Stimpson to win the Men's Doubles 55 title with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Paul Perrageaux and Don MacKay.

The weekend's biggest upset occurred in the Women's Singles 40s final when Bermudian Debbie Darrell stopped the top rated and highly favoured American Lenore Blair 2-6, 6-2, 6-1.

Hassell took the Women's Open crown with a 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory over Bermudian Kelly Holland, while Lenore Blair came back to win the Women's 50s crown by defeating Hassell 2-6, 6-2, 6-1.

As expected, top ranked Michael Way defeated Stuart Smith 6-2, 6-1 to win the Men's Open and then teamed with his brother Brian to take the doubles title with a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Smith and John Moore.
