More anguish for police
Phil Heaney scored all 12 points with four penalty kicks, two in each half, spurring the Rest on to victory in yesterday's annual Duckett Memorial Trophy match.
However, Police showed more determination to win and were unlucky not to have scored a couple of tries in the second half through Gareth Davis and Russell Matthews, both of which were well tackled just inches short of the try-line.
Police supporters were out in force with commissioner Lennett Edwards and his deputy Alex Forbes witnessing a fine display of hard, aggressive rugby.
The first half was a forward battle with The Rest getting the upper hand in the tight play with solid scrummaging and with new recruit Ashley Redmond in particular dominating the middle of the line-out.
It was indeed encouraging to see the foresight of the selectors in choosing young enthusiastic Bermudian talent like Redmond and Patrick Cooper.
For the last 10 minutes of the first half The Rest withstood a tremendous assault on their goal-line by Police who drove over for a disallowed try, the referee unable to decide on a score.
Unfortunately Police marred an otherwise sterling performance with dissension, which led to penalties and warnings from the referee.
They were also hampered by Alan Oliver limping off midway through the first half and also the lack of a tight-head prop where Steve Parkinson, normally a back-row forward, graciously filled in at the last minute.
