Moss eventually triumphed but not until after he had let a two-game lead disappear in the Men's B Division clash.

Both players struggled to gain their rhythm in the first game, with unforced errors in abundance. However, the younger, more agile Moss sneaked it 10-8.

Ward found the tin even more consistently in the second game, losing swiftly 9-4. But then Moss seemed to run out of steam, losing the third from 7-3 up.

His touch and confidence restored, Ward raced into a 5-1 lead in the fourth and although Moss won three points in a row to make it 5-4, Ward powered on to take it 9-4 and draw level.

Service changed sides on several occasions in the decider, but Moss finally got the upper hand to force a 9-5 victory.

In Men's A Division, Mel Caines made a promising start against Nick Kyme, racing to a 4-1 lead in the first game. But Kyme hit back, using his experience to take the game 9-7 and round off a victory 9-1 9-5.

In Men's D Division, Tim Bridges fought back from two games down to beat Steven Young. Young took the opening games 9-6, 9-2 but then Bridges found his touch to run through the remaining three 9-3, 9-4, 9-3.

Diane Morgan advanced to the final of the Women's D Division, caning Lisa Harris 9-0, 9-0, 9-2. She will meet the winner of the match between Stacey Coles and Diane Elliot in Sunday afternoon's final.

Meanwhile, in the junior Division B, Saltus students Alistair Melvin and Simon Bergl were involved in a battle that went to the wire.

Melvin lost a 5-1 lead in the first game to go down 9-5 and was beaten again in the second 9-7. But he managed to get himself together in the third to win 9-7, cruised the fourth dropping just one point and went into an 8-1 advantage in the last. Then service alternated for what seemed like ages with Bergl pulling himself back to 8-4.

But Melvin finally took the final point and with it the match after an amazing rally.
