Police skipper Sean Field-Lament suffered an horrific injury as his side went down to a heavy defeat by Teachers in the President's Cup.

Field-Lament left the field after an incident involving former Worcester professional Bobby Hurdle.

The player made a break and was tackled by Hurdle and in the ensuing ruck Hurdle's boot appeared to make contact with Field-Lament's head.

Referee John Weale pulled up the Teachers player and he was sin-binned for dangerous play.

Field-Lament came off much worse, suffering a perforated eardrum, requiring four stitches, and a broken hand, which needed an operation to insert a pin as the bone was fragmented. He is likely to be out of action for six weeks.

That incident aside, Teachers displayed their early season superiority by winning the match which pits the League champions against the winner of the Nichol Shield.

Teachers fielded a strong side with plenty of strength in depth on the sidelines.

In particular their back row covered the field, securing the ball for the ever ready backs.

Police, without the services of a number of stalwarts, kept it close in a first-half which ended 17-5. But fitness told in the second and their performance in the last 20 minutes of the game fell apart.

In the end Teachers scored seven tries to Police's one.

Mariners 48 Renegades 20 Mariners showed some early promise by beating Renegades 48-20 in a well fought match last weekend.

The lead changed hands several times throughout the game with Mariners eventually coming out on top.

Renegades were fortunate to have the services of Mark Hewitt, the West Indies Development Officer, who took control on the field and appeared to be giving some good coaching advice in the process.

In the end, Mariners scored seven tries to Renegades' three.

Renegades 62 Police 0 In the second team league, Renegades beat Police in the first league match of the new season.

The teams were cut to 13-a-side when Police struggled to field a full side.

Thanks to Renegades lending several of their stalwarts, including the evergreen Desmond Nash, the sides evened out.

Renegades fielded a strong team with many older players turning out, including Danny Forsythe and Phil Heaney.

At the end of a free-flowing but slow-paced game, Renegades ran out 62-0 winners.

The game between Teachers and Mariners was postponed as Mariners were unable to field a side.
