National coach? It's anybody's guess^.^.^.
Andrew Bascome says he does, and there have been reports of an unnamed individual from Poland making inquiries, but is anyone else interested? Robert Calderon, who resigned following last year's failed World Cup bid, certainly is not, and similar sentiments have been expressed by former technical director Clyde Best.
When Kenny Thompson was recently asked about his intentions regarding the post, his response was to "reserve comment'' ... ditto Mark Trott, the immediate past assistant to Calderon.
And last week Calderon poured scorn over the revelation that Bermuda Football Association were seeking to employ a national coach in what he asserted was a secondary role to that of the Director of Youth Development.
In the absence of a technical director or a senior coach having complete autonomy, the set-up of the national programme was depicted as something completely outside of any blueprint Calderon had ever seen ... at least any that had reaped genuine success.
The BFA's $1.3 million `action plan' does stipulate the possibility of implementing a technical director, but with $100,000 needed to pay for such, and few sponsors seemingly lining up to foot the bill, forecasts have the post remaining vacant for the foreseeable future.
As for the Director of Youth Development position, rumours abound that the association has already earmarked a suitor, with Under-17 national coach Thompson's name the one being bandied about.
The inference is that Thompson has already made presentations to the BFA, outlining his plan for developing the Island's young players into a domestic and international force, and they have accepted, making it a mere formality as to who gets the job.
Thompson currently also overseas North Village Community Club's soccer programme, widely viewed as the Island's best.
