Paget end Cup deadlock in style
League opponents, MR Onions, when Jermayn Pond netted five times in their 6-1 thrashing on Wednesday night at St. John's field.
As in the previous two meetings, Onions were holding their own against Second Division Paget with a 1-1 scoreline at the half.
But Paget switched into overdrive to romp to a comfortable victory as Pond scored all four times after the break and Daron Steede got the other. Now, Paget will take on struggling First Division team Devonshire Cougars in the third round, a match manager Alfred Ingham said they were looking forward to.
"This is the second time we have made it through to this round. The last time we met Southampton Rangers,'' Ingham recalled.
There was one significant factor in their victory over Onions.
"This time we were able to field a stronger team,'' said the manager.
"During the whole campaign this season we were not able to field a strong eleven but now we're building up to that now. Hopefully in the next round we might be able to do something with Cougars... we're looking forward to it anyhow.'' After edging by Lobster Pot in the first round of the cup, Paget will be relieved to see the last of Commercial League opponents. Onions certainly stretched them to the limit.
"They put up a good spirited fight,'' Ingham acknowledged. "It took a couple of games to get used to them and work on their weakness.
"All in all our whole team played well.'' Social Club, the only other Second Division team in the last 16 of the FA Cup, had a disappointing night at St. John's on Wednesday when they went down 3-2 to Prospect. It was not only their first loss of the season but they also missed the chance to take over first place in the standings.
